I don't have much to add about last night's episode, but I will share this text conversation I had with my mother, who also watches the show, last night.
For context, this was in the last five minutes when the copilot had his heart attack
Mom: Why are the flight attendants of no use on this plane?
Mom: They could be doing CPR! They should be trained for that
Me: Dramatic effect
#i will defend the flight attendants and say that there was a lot going on and a lot of people injured#plus their plane was falling apart#and their captain got sucked out of the cockpit#they're in shock right now#also#they were helping earlier in the episode#athena was just right there and started doing compressions#then the episode ended#911 spoilers#911 show#911 on abc#911 season 8#911 season 8 spoilers#911 8x02#911 abc

100ish word unedited snippets of various fic things i'm working on under the cut
And that plan was working out great for him right up until he was rounding the corner of the dairy aisle and spotted Ana Flores contemplating yogurt. Eddie is debating whether he can retreat when she looks up and catches his eye. Neither of them move for a moment, until Eddie bites the bullet and offers a small, and probably awkward wave, and walks closer.
“Ana. Hi.” He hopes his smile doesn't look as forced as it feels. He doesn’t have experience with this. His only other ex is, well…
“Edmundo. What a small world. It’s been a while.”
“Yeah. Wow, it has been. How are you?”
“Can’t complain. And yourself?”
“I’m, uh,” Great, is what he means to say, perfect small talk. What comes out of his mouth instead is: “Gay.”
-------
“I don’t want a cold compress i want your fucking dick in me.” It comes out as a whine. This is so fucking embarrassing, but Eddie’s frustrated in every way.
And then he hears–
“Are you laughing at me?”
“I’m so–I’m so sorry, baby. That was mean. Won’t happen again.”
______
“Hey, when were you born?”
Eddie raises his eyebrow. “Weren't you the one who organized that huge surprise birthday party last year?”
“Obviously I know your birthday,” he says with an eye roll. “I don’t mean the day. Like, what time were you born?”
Eddie frowns. “Why would I know that? Why do you want to know that?”
Buck gives him a big dramatic sigh, as if Eddie’s being the difficult one here, and stands to leave. “Forget it, I’ll ask your sister.”
“My sist-- What?” Eddie calls, but Buck is already heading down the stairs.
------
God he was just… he was just starting to get his shit together, there’s so much he wanted to do still. He hasn’t even said it out loud yet. He can feel his heart rate picking up, as he takes a deep steadying breath and says, to the crumbling ceiling, to the universe, “Fuck it. Okay. I’m gay!”
And that must have gotten Athena’s attention because she’s stopped her search around the room and is looking straight at him with a determined and stern face. “No.”
“What do you mean ‘no’? That wasn’t a question, I’m bearing my soul here—“
“No,” she repeats and steps closer to him. “I am not having another man thrust his sexuality crisis upon me. And we are not giving up like this. No offense, but you are the last person on my husband's team that I should be dying with, so you better get back in that closet. I am not hearing this.”
Eddie holds up his hands in defeat. “Jesus. Alright. I’m straight. Until we get out of here.”
-------
Everyone else at the station has kept their distance as soon as Buck came back from the supply closet with a confident look on his face and clipboard in hand, brandishing it like a prized possession. Buck Eddie kept close, following him around, doing his bidding, like the lovesick puppy he is.
It’s… God, it’s cute. And kind of hot. If he keeps stealing glances that’s not his fault. Eddie’s certain he’s being subtle, but after the seventh time he catches himself admiring his boyfriend he hears—
“Wait, seriously?” Buck’s walking closer, grin spreading on his face.
“What?”
“I know that face!”
“No. You don’t.” Eddie quickly busies himself with the task at hand, heat slowly creeping up his face. “Yes! I do! That’s your horny face. Oh my God!”
------
When he picks up his phone the next morning he’s greeted with roughly hundreds of unread messages and a few missed calls. Not all of them are from Buck. He has the A-shift group chat, a few messages from one of the guys he plays pickup basketball with, his cousin asking how long he’s in town for. (And Anthony sent a selfie from last night, but Eddie bypasses that one for now.) A good chunk of them are Buck though and the guilt gnawing at his stomach grows and grows as he scrolls through the messages.
The texts range from apologetic, to curt and angry, to completely off topic, probably Buck trying to lure him out by showing he could pretend it never happened. He sent a screenshot of an article about backyard beekeeping with a string of emojis at 1:33pm. That one was followed by another round of apologies sent an hour later, and a fuck you another hour after that.
finally he reaches the end, three messages that came in at 2:04am.
i won’t say anything
it was my fault

Dead-serious analysis of converging themes in Sophitia’s character design (and Elysium)
For a character whose entire story involves ancient Greek deities, Sophitia Alexandra has quite a bit of angelic imagery about her. This can be seen even in her move list where among names like “Olympus Shower” and “Dawn of Eos”, there’s “Angel Step” and “Seraphim Punisher”. I wasn’t about to make an exhaustive list for this point, but the latter two aren’t the only instances of this theme, as you’ll see in this one from Soul Calibur VI.
(Source: Soul Calibur Wikia.)
I haven’t managed to find the original source of this very compressed render, but I include it because it illustrates my point. This is Sophitia’s Soul Blade design with wings added, and it’s one point where the themes overlap. Considering that and the character’s backstory, you could make the case that this was made with the goddess Nike in mind.
(Source: Wikimedia Commons. The photo is in the public domain.)
This relief from the ruins of Euphesus (near Selçuk in Turkey) shows Nike, the personification of victory, in flight with a wreath in her hand. Come to think of it, this one reminds me a lot of Sophitia’s design in Soul Calibur III.
Here she’s wearing a wreath, a symbol of victory, as though to say “I have triumphed before and I can do it again”. She appears to be at mid-run, and with her swift movements in the games proper, the Nike motif is a natural fit. (It wasn’t until I worked on this bit that I noticed what was going on with the dress in both images. I leave it to the readers to decide to what end that similarity was a happy accident on Namco’s part.)
I only have so much to go on where Nike is concerned, but I think this is as good a spot as any to mention that she was closely identified with Athena. The following excerpt from the Byzantine encyclopedia Suda nicely sums it up:
"Nike Athena : Alternatively [she stands] allegorically for the notion that even winning is completely dependent on thought; for thought contributes to victory, but being thoughtless and impetuous while fighting leads to defeat. When she has wings she symbolizes that aspect of the mind that is sharp and, so to speak, swift-winged; but when she is depicted without wings she represents that aspect of it that is peaceful and quiet and civil, that by which the things of the earth flourish, a boon of which the pomegranate in her right hand is a representation. Just as the helmet in her left [is a representation] of battle. Thus she has the same capability as Athena."
(Retrieved from Theoi.com. Emphasis mine.)
While Sophitia starts off on a mission from Hephaestus, Soul Blade mentions her praying to “Pallas Athena”. Suffice it to say that in 16th century Athens, she’d be quite alone doing so, if anything. (Let’s be real: the series shies away from the fact that the ancient Greek religion died out long before the Ottomans were a thing.) But at the end of the day, her story starts because Soul Edge was powerful enough to attract the attention of the Olympian gods, and out of all the characters seeking the sword in Soul Blade, she’s the only one that knows it’s evil from the get-go. She destroys half of it, almost at the cost of her life, with even a shard stuck in her chest as though to remind her that the sword is far from done for.
Now, here’s why I brought up the angel imagery earlier:
Okay, that was one of the reasons. In Soul Calibur V, Elysium embraces the angel motif. As noted in New Legends of Project Soul, “Elysium’s design is meant to convey the divinity and grace of a goddess, but also a merciless apathy.” In story, this is the form that the spirit of Soul Calibur itself takes to manipulate Sophitia’s son Patroklos, who tries to live up to her legacy as a holy warrior (the operative word being “tries”, but that’s neither here nor there). It probably helped that the name Elysium comes from the paradisic realm of the ancient Greek afterlife reserved for heroes, but I digress.
Sophitia sought to purify those cursed by Soul Edge out of a sense of altruism, whereas Elysium’s ultimate goal is (at the risk of sounding a little Jungian) to bring order into a world afflicted by its counterpart’s chaos, regardless of who suffers in the process. Soul Calibur itself (and by extension, Soul Edge) is not tied to any god, has a will of its own, and is far from a compassionate being, its spirit’s angelic form is in contrast to Inferno’s fiery and monstrous one (and, well, the latter is named after Hell). Even so, Elysium’s guise is just that.
Tangents aside, you’ve probably inferred from the image of winged Nike that the angel comparison wasn’t much of a leap. Judging by the aforementioned setting, I think Sophitia would not be unfamiliar with at least the idea of angels, and that’s where I think the overlapping motifs work. In her efforts to cleanse Soul Edge’s evil, she desires to save people from it, going as far as to help Siegfried even with the knowledge that he was once Soul Edge’s wielder. That is where I see something of a guardian angel in her, and I like to think it ties into her surname Alexandra, which means “protector of mankind”. Sophitia fights not only at the behest of the gods, but on behalf of humanity.
P.S.: I omitted her story in Soul Calibur IV, since that was more about the lengths she went to save her daughter’s life because Soul Edge doesn’t give anyone a break. And apparently, her mother is named after Nike, but I couldn’t think of how to bring that up aside from an “oh, by the way...” I just feel like it could be short for something, but that one’s for the fanfics.
Last minute note before posting: I can’t believe it only just occurred to me that Sophitia was never shown with both a wreath and wings.
#soul calibur#sophitia alexandra#soul blade#soul edge#elysium#analysis#long post#i wasn't even going to title this but i felt i had to#don't mind the post date; this is not a joke#the fickle tech gods delayed the making of this post#and i don't always have the spoons to write these#webp be damned#i've been meaning to write a fic about sophitia growing up with stories of the gods but it just hasn't worked out for me yet#god i hate jung#it was either that or an off reference and i'm a sucker for punishment

Day 5: Buddie + “How do we fix this?” + angst
@buddieweek2020
This was not how Buck thought his night would go.
It started with him and Eddie having an argument borne off the tailcoats of their last rescue of the night. He had made a split-second decision, a justified and ultimately correct one that resulted in him saving a life, he just didn’t have the time to tell anyone that he made it until he emerged from the building covered in soot and glass and carrying an elderly woman.
Once they were off shift and at home the tension that had been held between him and Eddie finally manifested into an argument, one that was about being too reckless at work. They were in a steady relationship, and Eddie argued that it was time that Buck realised that, that he had a partner, a family that needed him to come home and not risk his life so needlessly.
Somehow it then shifted to being about trust. The fact that despite the fact that Buck trusted Eddie to do what was necessary in order to save someone, Eddie couldn’t do the same. That he didn’t trust that Buck was capable of making the hard choice, to get himself out of the situations that he puts himself in in order to save a life.
In the end, they were both left standing there, stung by the words that were said, out of argument material but still upset and angry over the situation.
“How do we fix this?” was all he asked Eddie when they had run out of things to say, but from the looks of it neither of them had an answer, at least not in this moment while emotions were still running high.
All he knew was that he needed to get out, to take some time away to think and give each other some space, so he left, telling Eddie that he was going for a drive but promised that he’d be back in a few hours.
Now, kneeling beside a man as he pumped his chest on the road, with blood running into his eyes, Buck wished more than anything that he had Eddie by his side.
Once again he was caught in an unlucky situation; wrong place, wrong time. The road had empty aside from one oncoming car when it happened. The car swerved, and he had barely enough time to react to avoid a head-on collision, but that’s not to say he and his car came away unscathed.
The car managed to clip his back bumper hard, sending him into a spin while it continued to careen into a brick wall. Everything that happened, did so in a blur. He cracked his head on the window before the airbags deployed from the steering wheel sending it crashing into his face and chest.
Buck doesn’t remember getting out of his car when it came to a stop, all he knows is that he managed to walk away from it and went straight to the other car, to find the driver unresponsive.
He doesn’t remember calling 911, but they were on the phone with him after he managed to pull the man from the wreckage of his car when he found that he had no pulse.
All he knows is that his chest felt like it was on fire and his eye stung as his vision turned red while he worked on this man. Miraculously, after only 4 cycles of compressions, the middle-aged man sputtered back to life and started breathing on his own, and all Buck could do was let out a sigh of relief as he rolled him into the recovery position.
He sat there, with his fingers on the still unconscious but now breathing man’s pulse as he updated the 911 operator who sounded suspiciously familiar. His chest ached, and breathing was now painful to the point of being a near-impossible task, so he sat and waited, hoping the ambulance was close because he’s pretty sure he’s about to pass out.
** ** ** ** ** ** **
When Eddie’s phone rang, he thought it would be Buck, hoping that it would be Buck because he’d been gone for over two hours and he couldn’t help but feel like something was wrong.
Turns out it was the other Buckley calling.
And it wasn’t good news.
The only words that registered were: Buck, hurt, and accident. That was all he needed to know before he was flying out the door with car keys in hand. Asking for the hospital he was transported to.
Maddie couldn’t give him much information as he drove, all she knew was that Josh had gotten a 911 call from Buck saying that had been in a car accident and had to resuscitate the other driver, which he did only to end up being transported to the hospital with his own injuries, It was unclear what the injuries were, but from what she gathered, Buck became unresponsive shortly after he announced that the driver had a pulse again.
From the sounds of it, they weren’t good if he had to be transported in his own ambulance. But surely they couldn’t have been that bad if Buck was able to perform CPR unassisted. Still, all that Eddie could imagine was a worst-case scenario and he couldn’t help but feel like it was his fault that Buck was hurt in the first place.
He should have stopped him. Why didn’t he? If they had just listened to each other and talked it out instead of yelling at each other, Buck wouldn’t have felt the need to leave, he wouldn’t have been in this accident alone, and he would have been safe at home. Eddie hopes that it's not as bad as he’s imagining because he would hate for the last memory Buck had of him would be of their fight.
Eddie was pretty sure that he made it to the hospital in record time and its times like these that he’s grateful that Christopher was at a sleepover. He wouldn’t have wanted him to see how uneasy and anxious he is over the thought of Buck being hurt and he’s well aware that he wouldn’t have been able to hide it from him.
When he gets to the main desk he’s barely had the chance to utter “I’m looking for my fiancé Evan Buckley,” when the familiar voice of Athena cuts across the din of the Emergency waiting room.
“Eddie, over here.”
Confused, he thanks the person at the desk and joins her on the far wall, “Athena? What are you doing here?”
“I was dispatched to the accident. I didn’t know it was Buck until I got there, he’s was already being loaded into the ambulance by the time I was on the scene. I followed them here to get his statement.”
Before he has a chance to ask her if she knew how he was, a nurse joined them saying that Buck was ready to take visitors now that they had finished assessing him. He explained the short list of injuries as they walked.
It’s not until Eddie sees Buck in person that he allows the tightness in his chest to loosen. Of course, Buck was chatting with the doctor who was working on the deep cut on his forehead. He barely looked injured aside from the gash, but Eddie knew from the nurse that the worst of it was hidden by his gown.
When he sees Eddie and Athena his smile brightens a moment before it dims as if he remembers the core reason why he was in this predicament. Athena, ever perceptive, notices this and takes charge, asking Buck everything he remembered from the accident. As Buck recounts his side of the events, Eddie is reminded of the reasons he loved the man and can’t help but feel proud of him for what he did.
It’s not until after Athena and the doctor had left does he finally address his fiancé with fond exasperation, “You’re an idiot, you know that right? Putting yourself at risk. You could have punctured a lung from your rib fractures from resuscitating that man, Buck.”
“I was the only one there! He would have died if I didn’t do anything.” Bucks gestures without thinking and winces from the movement.
Eddie groans softly to himself at Buck’s bull-headedness and moves closer to the bed and rests a hand lightly in his hair, “And if you did puncture a lung before the ambulance got there, you might have died with him.”
“But I didn’t, Eddie! And I saved a life, why don’t you get that?”
He ends up sitting heavily in the chair beside Buck, frustrated that he still wasn’t understanding what he was trying to say, “Our fight from before; I realised after you left that it was never about me not trusting your ability, you’re a brilliant firefighter, it was me being afraid for you.” He runs a hand through his hair as his eyes fixate on the only visibly wound on Buck as he continues.
“You are so willing to save a life at the cost of your own to the point that you don’t even bat an eye at it. I was scared over the thought that one day, you’ll go in for a risky rescue and not tell anyone your plan, and when you don’t come back none of us will know what happened to you.”
Buck deflates and settles back down against the pillow, “Oh.”
“Yeah, oh.” Eddie reaches out to take Buck’s hand and gently kisses his knuckles, “Just promise me that you’ll communicate with us from now on, so we can all agree it’s worth the shot even if you think we’re wasting time. I’d rather see you live to have the chance to save more people than to die from a half-cocked plan we could have prevented.”
“Alright, I can do that.” Buck squeezes Eddie’s hand, “I promise.”

Can you hear me screaming please don’t leave me
Summary: Bobby Nash and his niece were always really close. But on one fateful day he and his team were called to her house after her suicide attempt. After saving her his niece decided to go in the same line as work.
The summer went by fast. Within that time I have passed all of my tests to become an EMT. Only Uncle Bobby and Athena were there the day I passed my test and got my assignment to the 118 of course. Uncle Bobby made sure that I was put with the 118. Still no one beside him and Athena knows. I have also been spending time with Buck, Hen and Chimney. Just like Buck promise he and I went to a concert. We went to see Falling In Reverse (RIP Derek Jones I’m going to miss you.). When the mosh pits started Buck protected me as if life deepened on it. I just laugh my head off and Buck thought I lost my mind. I was used to mosh pits and I guess Buck wasn’t but he face was still priceless. Within all the time that I’ve spent with Buck so far he told me about his family, his sister Maddie, and his girlfriend or ex-girlfriend he wasn’t so sure about that situation. Anyways I’m currently on my way to the station to surprise everyone and tell them the news. I wasn’t the only new member that joining the 118. There’s a new guy named Eddie Diaz. I really only knew his name since that was all that Uncle Bobby told me.
When I got to the station the rest of the team was out on a call so there weren’t many people there. So I went upstairs and sat on one of the couch as I waited for everyone to get back. I texted Uncle Bobby to let me know when they come back so that I could hide if I needed to. I was playing on my phone when I could hear footsteps approaching me. “So you must be the Captain Niece.” A voice say. I look up from phone to see a very hot guy sitting on the table that was in front of the couch. I put my phone in my lap. “I’m guessing you are Eddie Diaz.” I said. “I am.” Eddie said. “Well I’m Y/n it’s nice to meet you.” I said holding out my hand. “Well it’s nice to meet you Y/n.” Eddie said as he shook my hand. “Eddie huh it that short for Eduardo or Edmundo?” I asked. Eddie looked kinda shocked. “How did you know?” Eddie asked. “I’m observant. So which is it?” I asked. “Edmundo.” Eddie said. “You look like an Edmundo.” I said smiling a little. “Why thank you. So Y/n what made you decided to do this? Because no offense you are really small.” Eddie said. “None taken but I can handle my own. As for why I chose to do this is a circumstance I went through I guess you can say.” I said. “Well I would like to hear all about it if you don’t mind telling me.” Eddie said. I shook my head. “No I don’t mind. It was a few months ago. I wasn’t exactly in the best mind space again. I’ve dealt with depression almost my whole life as with self harm. I tried to kill myself for the third time. I tried when I was thirteen and again when I was sixteen. I know that I can’t change what I’ve been through but I want to help people so they don’t have to feel or go through what I did.” I said as showed the scars that were on my wrist. Eddie took ahold of both of my wrist as he ran his thumbs over them then looked up at me. “I’m sorry that you had to go through that.” Eddie said. “Thank you Eddie that means a lot.” I said. “I guess that makes since now. The captain told me about a lot of people here are protective of you.” Eddie said. “Yeah that would make since. So I told you about myself some now why don’t you tell me about yourself.” I said taking my hands out of Eddies grip putting them in my lap.
Eddie told me about his life that he was in the army and that he has an extremely adorable boy name Christopher and that poor Christopher has cerebral palsy. Eddie even told me about the situation that was going on his wife and how didn’t know what he was going to do about it and how he was going to explain it to Christopher when he does. I told him that whatever he decides that Christopher would understand in time and that he might be the one who might take longer to get over it than Christopher. I made sure that Eddie knew that if he or Christopher needed someone to talk to that I will be all ears. Eddie seemed relieved when I said that. Uncle Bobby finally texted me saying that they were on their way. I smiled as I started jumping slightly in my seat. “Well someone seems excited.” Eddie said. “Well I asked my uncle to text me when they were on their way back because I want to surprise everyone.” I said. “So no one besides the captain knows?” Eddie asked. I shook my head. “Well I hope you have fun surprising them.” Eddie said as he got up. “Are you not going to say to see their reaction?” I asked. “I hope I’m still here. I have to get back home to Christopher.” Eddie said. “I understand that. I hope to meet that little cutie soon.” I said. “Christopher would really like that. So I guess I’ll be seeing you around.” Eddie said. “Yeah see you later.” I said giving him a little wave.
I stay sat on the couch until uncle Bobby told me that it was safe to come down. When he finally I got up from my spot and made my way down the stairs. “Okay that is a beautiful man.” I heard chimney say. If I had to guess it was probably Eddie that were talking about. “Where’s the lie and I like girls.” Hen said. “Who in the hell is that?” Buck said. “It’s Eddie Diaz a new recruit. Graduated top of his class just this week. Guy was working a station six for time and a half but I convinced him to join to join us.” Uncle bobby said. “What do we need him for?” Buck asked. Which made everyone laugh. “He severed multiple tours in Afghanistan and he’s an army medic he’s got a sliver star. It’s not like he’s wet behind the ears. Beside he’s not the only new face that going to be around here.” Uncle Bobby said. Taking that as my que I finished walking down the stairs and over to everyone. “Yeah now you guys are going to have to deal with me a lot more.” I said. “Wait are you serious?” Buck asked. “Yup I passed my test last week.” I said. Buck smiled as he hugged me. “Welcome to the team sweetie.” Hen said. “Thank momma Hen.” I said. “Come on I’ll introduce you to him. He likes to be called 8 pack.” Uncle Bobby said as Hen and Chimney went with him to go say hi to Eddie just leaving Buck and I. “Raw Sliver star.” Hen said. “Better drop some more pounds there butch.” Chimney said. Buck looked back towards the locker room and kinda glared at Eddie. “You know I can see the steam coming for your ears. What to share with the class.” I said. “We don’t need that guy around here.” Buck said. “I’m pretty sure they said the same thing when you came around. Just take some time and get to know him Buck. He’s a nice guy.” I said. “How can you be so sure about that?” Buck asked. “Because before everyone got here we talked. Just talk to him Buck who knows you two could become best friends.” I said. “Yeah but you’re my best friend. A best friends that should have told me about this.” Buck said. “I wanted it to be a surprise. Come on admit it you were surprised Bucky bear.” I said. “Ok fine I was surprised. But you should have told me I would have been there when you took the final test.” Buck said. “I know but Uncle Bobby was there. I wasn’t alone. I have to go change but I’ll be right back.” I said as I left to go to the ladies locker room so I can quickly get change so I can get ready to start my first shift.
Luckily I was able to get change before we had to go out in a call. “So what kind of experience is my first call going to be?” I asked. “A guy fell on to an air compression butt first.” Uncle Bobby said. “The million to one shot.” I said. I could hear people trying not to laugh even uncle Bobby was trying not to laugh. “Come on get in the rig.” Uncle Bobby said. I nodded and made my way inside the fire truck. Buck was sitting on one side of me and Chimney was sitting on the other side of me. I out the head set on and we made our way to the call. “So sliver star huh?” Chimney asked. “Yeah.” Eddie said. “Did you save a platoon of something?” Chimney asked. “No no. Nothing like that uh just a convoy.” Eddie said. “Eddie you heard about the hot firefighter calendar?” Hen asked. I look at Buck to see him glaring at Hen. I playfully nudge him. “I’m sorry the what” Eddie asked laughing at little. “For charity.” Hen said. “So is your full name Eduardo?” Buck asked. “No.” Eddie said. “People every call you Diaz?” Buck asked. “Not if they want me to repose.” Eddie said. “Something gotta give we got Cap, Hen, Chimney, Buck. We just can’t call you Eddie.” Buck said. “Can’t tell if he’s being serious or not.” Eddie said. “I like to always operate under the assumption that nothing he says is serious.” Chimney said. “Oh come on Bucky bear you know we love you.” I said nudging him.
When we arrived at Hector’s Rim and Tire shop Uncle Bobby was the first to go talk with the worker while the rest of us got the Medical stuff that we were going to need. We were lead over to a like who had blew up like a balloon. “Okay Hector can you hear me? Alright hang in there buddy. Alright let’s get him on his side maintain pressure on the wound.” Uncle Bobby said as He, Eddie, Chimney, Buck and I helped with lifting Hector off of the air pressure. “It’s a hundred pounds per square inch pumped through his entire body.” Buck said. Hen started to check his heart rate with a stethoscope. “Breathing shallow. He’s heart is racing. Airs filled his stomach, his chest, even behind his eye lids. I’m more concerned about the space around his heart and lungs.” Hen said. “Ok Eddie start a nasal cannula. Chimney get him some morphine.” Uncle Bobby said. “On it.” Chimney said as he went over to Hector’s side grabbing his hand and tried to stick him. “It’s like trying to inject a needle into stone.” Chimney said. “The pressure is pushing everything out. I can’t even get any air through the nostril.” Eddie said trying to get the nasal cannula on. “Jugular venous distention, tachycardia, hypotension, diminished breath We’re looking at tension pneumothorax.” Hen said. “The air pressure is collapsing his organs. We need to get in there and drain the fluid. Buck I need you to get a 14-gauge angiocath. We need to start decompressing the pleural cavity. Y/n I need you to cut away his shirt.” Uncle Bobby said. I nodded as Chimney handed me a pair of scissors the I cut away at Hector’s shirt so it would be easier for Buck. I stood back up so Buck could have room to work. “Alright. Alright.” Buck said. “You want me to help?” Eddie asked him. “I got it.” Buck said. “Hang in there Hector.” Uncle bobby said. “I’d go lower.” Eddie said. “What? Um no. Second intercostal space. Midclavicular line.” Buck said. “The chest wall is thinner at the fifth intercostal at the anterior axillary line. It’s a decrease chance of injuring any vital organs. I’ve treated guys with collapses lungs in combat.” Eddie said. “Do it.” Uncle bobby said. “Please?” Eddie asked as he held his hand to Buck. Buck handed the syringe to Eddie. “Thank you.” Eddie said as he stuck the syringe parallel to Hector’s under arm then undid part of it as the air started to leave Hector’s body. Hector let out a breath as he opened his eyes. “That’s it Hector breathe. Nice and slow.” Uncle Bobby said. Then we got Hector on a gurney and I help Buck pick stuff up and take it back to the rig.
A/n: I know that I have another way of watching season two. But I usually watch the stuff I need with subtitles and I can’t with the way I've been watching it. So I might have to be this story on hold until either it get back on Hulu or it comes out to DVD

The Prince of the Sea
First Chapter || Previous Chapter || Next Chapter || AO3
Triton heard the rumors from the fish. The whispers of a child controlling the water in the river. A child that smelled strangely mortal and yet a layer of the sea clung stubbornly to them.
Triton eventually went to see this child, perhaps a child of a minor god was learning how to use their powers?
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
The child was so much more than a child of a minor sea god.
Triton watched him manipulate the water better than half the students of Atlantis’s elite academy. He watched him freeze it.
The amount of skill that took was ridiculous. Ice does not come easy to those of the mid seas. The northern most and southern most were skilled in it, but this child was definitely not of those.
The eye’s gave him away.
They were the same eye’s Triton had. The same eye’s that every child of Poseidon ever had.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He watched his half-brother for a time.
He wasn’t sure what he was doing at the start, but it seemed he was cleaning the river?
Did he lose something in it?
Triton watched though, he watched as the boy learned to raise the water, learned to make waves, spoke with the fish, studied some of the harder magics of the sea, seemingly without even realizing.
He spoke with an eel named Elli a lot.
Triton did not understand this spawn of his father’s. How was his scent so weak when he obviously knows his heritage? His presence only felt faintly of immortal power. It was strange.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
His name was Percy.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He knows nothing of his heritage.
He has no idea of the gods and no idea who Triton is.
Triton was… confused.
He called his control of the water, waterbending. Triton would allow it for now.
Triton studied him more though, he was cleaning in the middle of winter. That was a dangerous time for mortals even today. He was young, he shouldn’t be risking his health like that.
Triton wasn’t sure he approved of a foolishly reckless half-brother, even if it was to help the river.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
His half-brother asked if he was named after… himself. Triton had to hold back a laugh.
His brother was powerful yet ignorant, a dangerous combination. But right now, one that kept him hidden. Triton would not destroy that protection yet, he was not needlessly cruel.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton hid his knowledge of Percy from his father. He was good at keeping a straight face.
Triton also didn’t tell his mother though, she may not be vengeful but she would be rightfully angry with Poseidon. And that would give it away.
Poseidon didn’t seem to check on Percy often, perhaps because he didn’t want Amphitrite or Triton to know about him.
Jokes on him, Triton was already interacting with Percy.
He was careful not to visit him on days that Poseidon wasn’t busy though, no need to make it easy for him to find out about their meetings.
He wondered if his father had noticed Percy training his Hydrokinesis? (Or Triton supposed it was actually his Thermomancy, seeing how he wasn’t only controlling water. Ice control was extremely difficult for his heritage, perhaps he was able to do it so easily because he was emulating this water bending he spoke of.)
He doubted Father had noticed yet, his father cared but he would be too afraid to check often. It would not just be to keep Triton and Amphitrite from knowing but also to prevent any other immortal from noticing him checking on someone so often and investigating.
That would reveal Percy quicker than anything else.
It didn’t matter though, right now it worked in Triton’s favor.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton told off those two river god’s who’d been spying on his half-brother so much.
They had better things to do, maybe they could clean their own damn rivers instead of letting a child do it.
Truly shames to water immortals.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton decided that his half-brother should learn to use a trident.
It was the weapon of their family, and he would dishonor them to not learn it.
Percy was determined to prove himself more skilled than Triton expected. He made a trident out of ice. He wasn’t even trying to show off, but it was impressive.
Sure, it was brittle, but he could make actual shapes now, and they held for a short time.
He would be strong one day.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton could not believe his half-brother got expelled for doing as he was told.
So, what if they got dropped in a shark tank? Sharks weren’t dangerous anyways. They were absolute sweethearts as long as you didn’t try to hurt them. He’d had a dozen pet sharks over the years!
Honestly that guide should get fired.
Perhaps he should introduce them to a true dangerous sea creature…
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton decided he’d let Percy play around long enough, plus there were some incidents in the sea that were taking more of his attention.
If he’d been raised in the sea, he would already know the basics of sea law and culture. He could not remain ignorant there, not if he was to be a prince of the sea.
Thankfully, Triton didn’t need to worry about that weakening the protections around his interesting half-brother. Percy was convinced there was an underwater society. Triton could work with that.
He gave him books, just a few. It would be a good base for future lessons.
He also had to give him a dictionary for the Halmaheran language apparently, he didn’t know it. What did land dwellers teach anyways?
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton was not pleased that he’d had to go away, sure he’d expected to be busier with the incidents happening, but this was far worse than he’d expected.
There was a massive oil spill.
It required all hands-on-deck to try and save as many lives as possible, and to try and relocate all the coral.
It was a massive undertaking with a lot of merfolk and sea beings involved.
Triton was working overtime both in his duties as a prince to reassure the people and work with the rescue crews to show that he was willing to help, and also in his duties as a messenger and ruler of the tides.
He barely had time to breathe for over two months.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He finally had the time to check on Percy again.
He needed to be sure he’d been doing his reading and practicing the Halmaheran language.
He only spoke to Percy in Halmaheran, make sure he could get used to it. Percy actually did pretty good.
The river seemed dirtier than the last time he was there though.
His eyes narrowed, that was suspicious.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
His half-brother just called him a great friend.
Were they friends?
Triton hadn’t had a real friend in a long time.
His last few… they hadn’t made it to the current day.
And then there was Athena.
He supposed he would accept his half-brother calling him a friend.
It certainly meant nothing to Triton, he was an immortal, he was not attached to his mortal brother.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He couldn’t believe the little brat didn’t tell him about his birthday!
Birthday’s were extremely important for children!
This would not stand.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He gave Percy his presents, and almost turned to hunt down this mortal ‘Smelly Gabe’ who apparently wouldn’t allow his brother to properly celebrate his birthday.
How dare he.
He held his anger in though, watching Percy find the sand dollars he’d spent a week carefully compressing and shaping, along with the bracelet that he’d made for Percy.
The coral conch shell charm on it would keep him updated to Percy’s health.
He had a feeling he’d want that in the future.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
I don’t get my brother’s obsession with going beyond in his thermomancy.
It’s a powerful magic, but he’s doing well so far. He should focus on using weapons now as well. He was able to make a solid trident that didn’t break so easily now, why did he need to work on drawing water from plants at his age?
Thermomancy was a dangerous magic, he was doing excellent at it but going too far to harm his source of power, the power he inherited from father. I tried to distract him from it.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
So apparently, Percy learned how to draw water from plants.
Well, if his brother wanted to work so much on that then Triton supposed he could humor him, at least then he would know when his brother was practicing.
Triton assigned him homework on drawing moisture from other sources, ones that shouldn’t be too hard with his base of skill.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton was touched by the gift Percy had gotten him.
It was clearly hand-made, it still radiated Percy’s power.
The bracelet fit his color theme, and the charm was a sparkling version of his trident. It was very well made.
He wasn’t sure his trident charm in return was as good, but Percy seemed happy, so Triton simply decided to get better presents for him in the future.
This one was practical, and something Poseidon should’ve done if he wasn’t off pretending Percy didn’t exist.
Maybe Triton was a little bitter on Percy’s behalf.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton added assignments for Percy to do.
Things that he should’ve been raised learning, Triton would fix his father’s failings.
He made sure to quiz Percy often, making sure that he was up to date on current events and knew about the different forms of magic he may face.
He made sure he knew the territories to avoid and how to identify them.
He made sure his brother could be the perfect prince when needed.
Triton would make sure he knew his heritage.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton couldn’t help being impressed.
He’d guessed already which magics Percy would probably be best at.
Thermomancy for one, but that was common in children of the sea (or at least Hydrokinesis was). Though Percy seemed to have a special knack for it.
He had the potential for Siren’s song, but that would have to be trained. It had some instinctual parts yes, but to really unlock it’s power you had to focus it. Percy would require a lot of time before he was truly skilled at it.
But what Percy had shown a subconscious skill for was Purification.
It wasn’t considered a dangerous magic at all, but it is powerful. And it was extremely useful these day’s with all the pollution around.
Percy had a clear talent for it, cleansing the water around him even without meaning to.
It seemed he’d started practicing some of it, though being him, he’d immediately jumped to one of the more advanced forms.
Sand dollars are extremely valuable when made by a Purifier (someone skilled in Purification). Triton could make some of course, and he was rather good at purification magic out of necessity, but Percy had an instinctive knack for it that was rare.
Triton needed to encourage that.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Of course, another of his brother’s schools were run by complete imbeciles.
Expelling him because an exhibit collapsed, how idiotic. He was not pleased.
But he gave Percy more work, distracting him from the expulsion.
He gave him more history to study, he decided to work with him with other weapons. A sword would be a good weapon for now. Perhaps knives next.
He still worked with him on the trident though, that was the weapon of the sea and the one he must know.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Those filthy idiotic immortal pieces of trash told Percy that he was a demigod.
How dare they, they ruined all the work Triton had put into keeping Percy untouched from the immortal world.
Percy had questions, Triton would have to be careful about answering them, less he reveal too much and completely destroy his little brother’s protections.
But first, he paid a visit to those minor river gods.
No one would miss them.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He played along in court, he needed to see Percy, but his father had requested his presence. So, he went to his father.
Playing the prince was tiring right now, he just wanted to talk to Percy about what he’d learned.
His only reassurance was the conch shell pin that was connected to Percy’s charm. It showed that Percy was safe.
He should give Percy a way to escape from danger.
Just in case.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Explaining the history to his little brother was… difficult.
He had to be careful, he couldn’t tell him about certain things, things that may lead to him understanding and accepting the immortal world around him.
Him accepting the sea was one thing, that didn’t damage his protection, but for him to accept the immortal world as his… that couldn’t be allowed. Not yet.
So, Triton made sure to explain it, made sure to tell him he would be in danger, because he would not allow his brother to be harmed.
Percy is his brother.
The sea protects its own.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Percy was getting better at purification magic. Triton was glad.
Percy’s gift was impressive, he kept it in his room.
The purifying stone probably wouldn’t work long. But it would last a few weeks probably. Triton liked it regardless.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton made sure his brother had an escape route now. The pearl would bring him straight to Triton if he was in danger.
Hopefully he would never need it.
He also gave him a book on the Siren’s Song.
It was one of the most basic though, just describing it in detail and explaining some of the most basic exercises to train it.
It wouldn’t help him much yet, not without an instrument to practice putting his power through first.
Using your voice was both the easiest and the hardest way, it was the most powerful, but the hardest to control once you’d unlocked it. It was always best to start with an instrument.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Percy was attracting monsters now.
He was very lucky it was a young, weak, empousai, the younger ones tend to reform slowly. He should be safe for a while from other monsters hearing about it.
He needs to get better at fighting with water though if it’s going to be his go to. Exploding the pipes was extreme, but if he was going to turn to the ocean first, then he would need to improve on controlling it in a fight.
Triton started drilling him in it.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton couldn’t help but be pleased, Percy had a large interest in the sea magics.
He seemed to have a strong affinity for some of them.
That usually came with drawbacks in other areas though.
Percy was young now, so it was hard to tell. Perhaps his mortal half would balance it?
Nonetheless, he was more than willing to help Percy learn more.
Even if it meant he had to go learn more, he’d never paid a huge amount of attention in those classes. His skills lay more in other areas.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton spent a lot of time studying sea magics, so he could teach Percy more.
His father was pleased that Triton was showing an interest at last.
Ugh.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
So maybe Triton assigned a Cyclops to watch over Percy this year.
It didn’t do any good it seems.
He was not pleased that the school was just as idiotic as the last five.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton got Percy a Rainbow stone.
Making them is ridiculously hard, but he was able to convince (read: bribe) Natia, one of the strongest in enchantments that he knew, to make it.
He added the protections himself though, he didn’t trust her to not try to tap into it.
The Rainbow stone’s were almost shaped like gems, made of a pale white stone that seemed flecked with rainbow glitter. Channeling a little power into it would make a rainbow form.
He also made sure his brothers had drachmas to pay for it if he needed to.
He was touched by the hair pin his brother made for him. He quite liked it, it matched his trident well.
The sand dollars though, those were very impressive. He was already matching the skills of mer’s Triton knew that had practiced for many years.
Percy may be skilled in his Thermomancy, but his purification was where he truly shined.
Father was confused as to where he was getting the small presents.
Triton didn’t tell him.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton was annoyed that his little brother’s school didn’t accommodate his differences. He was of the sea not the land, yet they expected him to learn through land methods?
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
The Cyclops didn’t succeed in keeping Percy out of trouble, despite literally being an alibi, somehow they failed to get Percy out of trouble.
How troublesome.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
There was a small event coming up, between some of the younger high-ranking merfolk.
Normally he wouldn’t attend those, but it would be a good introduction for Percy.
He could make up a backstory for him and did.
They wouldn’t suspect much, Triton had helped do introductions before, usually because he was ordered to or as a favor, but they didn’t know that.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Making the stone to give Percy the tails he would have if he were changed to a merman was amusing.
His little brother was delighted by it.
It was… adorable.
He was determined to keep his little brother out of the mess that the prophecy would cause. He wouldn’t let this one go. Percy was his brother, he would protect him at all costs.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He was extremely pleased with how Percy handled the little event.
He showed he was strong, he showed he was polite, and he showed that he knew how to stand up for himself too.
Triton of course took over when the one brat thought that they could speak out of turn in his presence, but otherwise he let Percy learn.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton took Percy to a few events after that. He wanted to be sure that Percy could handle the politics that come with being high ranking in the sea.
He was doing well and had made some friends.
He found it every so amusing that Percy didn’t quite understand yet that the brighter and more visible you were in the sea, the more dangerous you generally were.
Percy’s tail glittered, even in the dark of the sea depths. It’s blues of many shades shone, the flowy additions almost glowing in the dark.
Percy was befriending quite dangerous merfolk to match.
Samoa was all white, though that wasn’t natural, she’d created a magic dye that lasted for a few years. Her hair was naturally a brown. She just wanted to seem scarier. She was very good at making sand dollars though. Her and Percy were bonding over that.
She was probably the least dangerous of his friends.
Elei was dangerous, but not in magic. She was the daughter of one of the generals of father’s army. She was trained as such too. Though she was young, and thus had little experience, she was still a good sparring partner for Percy. She usually won. Her hair and tail was a deep red, though it seemed green in the dark of the ocean. Her tail was also one of the sleekest he’d seen, a sign that she had zero skill in magic.
Masina was a rising expert in controlling the ocean currents. They could weave them in ways that most trained for years couldn’t even begin to imagine. And they were only a little older than Percy. Their tail was a blend of blues and yellows, some dashes of pinks mixed in as well. It was bright and very flowy, like Percy’s. They tried teaching Percy how to use the currents, but he definitely did not have an affinity for the currents.
He said he felt he would lose himself to them. That’s alright, it was a sign that the current’s just weren’t for him.
Triton couldn’t help but find it amusing.
Fetu and Lagi were twins, both were skilled in different magics.
Fetu had an unnatural talent for the Siren’s song, and many were wary of him for it. Lagi was one of the best healers around. Both were rarer talents, but their parents had been powerful themselves, so it made sense. Their tails were matching yellows, bits of orange shining through them, and they were flowy, though not quite as much as Percy’s. Their hair was obnoxiously bright yellow, a real sign of the danger they posed.
Triton was glad Percy was making such powerful friends, they would be great help to him should he need it.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
The summer solstice was nice.
Percy had given him a box made of ice.
Percy seemed to like ice a lot. The runes were carved well, he was pleased with it.
He also liked the sand dollars. They were very well made.
Percy had clearly improved a lot, they now drew in power like they were supposed to. They weren’t quite perfect, drawing in the power far slower than a proper sand dollar, but he was improving.
He gave Percy a hair pin that he’d had made for him.
His hair was getting long after all, he needed it out of his face for battles.
Also, it may or may not be enchanted to keep him safe from poisons. Not many would be able to affect him with his Purification skills, but better safe than sorry.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Getting an enchanted waterskin for Percy’s birthday required a bit of work.
He could make one, but that would clearly have his signature on it. That wasn’t something easy to hide.
He ended up managing to get one when they had to go to a… dinner…. With Oceanus. His grandfather.
His mother didn’t want them to fight too much, but father was always very tense when they interacted with him.
The important thing was that Oceanus let him take one of his old waterskins (the proper name for this one was Oceanskin, but Percy probably wouldn’t care).
They were useful when on land, but Oceanus hadn’t left the sea in ages. It was one of the few that just felt like the sea in general, not a specific signature.
Percy was delighted with it, so it was worth the curious gleam in Oceanus’s eye when he left.
Hopefully Oceanus didn’t try to investigate.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Percy was back at school, and apparently had gained a sense for curses.
It wasn’t that surprising, he probably had the ability sooner, just hadn’t been around anything cursed.
It was a useful skill to have, very valuable. Father always had a skilled Purifier to check over any gifts given to those at the courts.
Nonetheless, Triton got him more books on Purification. He supposed it was time for Percy to branch out more.
Curse breaking was where purifiers really shone. Though none were skilled enough to break the great curses, perhaps one day.
He was curious how quickly Percy would get the hang of it.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Percy got him a variety of foods for the fall equinox.
Really that wasn’t good, Triton liked them a lot, and Percy had infected him with a matching love of blue food.
It was hard to explain to father.
He wondered how father didn’t know about Triton interacting with Percy yet.
He wasn’t exactly hiding it anymore.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton had worked hard to get Percy some clothes fit for a prince for the winter solstice.
It was hard because he’d never needed to buy them. Everyone was confused and interested in his sudden interest.
Father made a comment about him finding a lover.
Disgusting, as if any land dwellers were worth his interest except for Percy.
Honestly merfolk were so nosy.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Percy’s teacher was annoying. Triton didn’t like them at all.
He suggested Percy use school to practice his “princely” skills. Might as well, it would be good practice when away from the sea.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
The stone horse Percy had enchanted was impressive. They were obviously done by a novice, but he could see the work his little brother put into it, he approved.
He kept it in his room, it made it feel just a little safer.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He loved the equinox, Percy got him a sunflower preserved in ice, they were really pretty flowers.
Poseidon had finally noticed that something was up, as had Amphitrite.
Apparently the three years of disappearing a lot to talk with Percy, and the last few months of literally bringing Percy down here didn’t give them a hint. But him bringing home a sunflower did.
Go figure.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton got Percy a star stone. They were one of his favorite things when he was a child. To see the stars underwater, he thought his little brother would appreciate it.
It was after all, something his father had failed to give Percy.
The stone could project the stars around, but otherwise it was almost like those snowglobes Percy had told him about, except with stars.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
So perhaps Percy’s latest school flooding had been his fault. But the school deserved it.
That pathetic excuse of a teacher expelling Percy just because he had been kicked out of schools in the past.
She was trash.
On another note, he got Percy more books on purification magic. It made sense that he failed to fully release the curse when Triton finally met this “Guinea pig”, though now it was a fish.
Circe was too powerful for Percy’s current level. His attempt to release the curse simply morphed it, changing it to more sea based instead.
It was a pretty good first attempt though.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton got Percy more new clothes. He needed to be sure Percy had a full wardrobe by the time he went to camp. That would be when Poseidon would notice.
Triton was perhaps being a little petty, but he wanted to rub it in his fathers face a little that he had been the one to raise Percy, he had been the one to teach him of his heritage.
Poseidon had done nothing for Percy, it had all been Triton.
He also got Percy an Ocarina, it was a good starting instrument for Siren’s Song. It would help Percy improve his curse breaking to mix Purification and Siren’s Song.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
Triton liked the geode snow globe Percy made him. It was sparkly and rather unique.
It also matched his tail.
OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO
He thought it was hilarious that Percy’s mom didn’t approve of the hair dye. The hair dye was brilliant. It was made by Samoa after all, and her dye wouldn’t come out or let any of the original color show even at the roots for a long time. It was magic dye after all.
Those of the sea rarely had plain colored hair, there’s a reason Samoa created the dye.
Father was one of the few to have straight black hair, even Triton’s own was simply a very dark blue.
He quite liked Percy’s hair.

He decided that Percy needed something to keep his belongings safe now.
He was growing older and would likely be going to camp soon.
Triton gave him a bag made by the Cyclops’s. It wouldn’t let anyone, but Percy, take things out of the bag, and would protect the contents from outside forces.
Percy seemed delighted, he was glad. His little brother needed more people looking out for him. He just hoped his gifts were enough to help.

Percy was going to a boarding school.
Triton was a lot less pleased than he let on.
Percy would be away, harder to reach, harder to talk to.
He was glad he’d given him the rainbow stone because otherwise he might have to influence Percy’s mom away from that school.
And that would be hard to explain.
Still though, he worried, Percy would be alone for the year.
But surely Percy would be alright for the year, it’s not like he’d be going back.
Nothing too horrible could happen in the space of one year.
Right?

Skies on Fire
Author: Lopithecus Pairing: Evan “Buck” Buckley/Eddie Diaz Rating: General Audiences Word Count: 2905 Alternate: AO3 Summary: "'Okay, Mister ‘I don’t like the 4th of July.’ What’s your opinion on fireworks?' Chim asks.
Eddie shrugs and scrunches up his nose in that way Buck finds adorable. 'They’re loud.'"
It's the 4th of July and Eddie hates fireworks. Warnings:
PTSD
Mild Hurt/Comfort
Eddie Diaz has PTSD
Author's Note: I can’t believe no one has written a 4th of July Buddie fic (that I could find using the search function at least. If there is one, please send me a link because I would love to read it.) So, obviously I had to write one myself. Enjoy!
Buck loves the 4th of July. He loves the excitement that it instills in everyone, he loves the celebration of it, the food that is served during the cookouts, and most importantly, Buck loves the fireworks that are set off at night. Overall, the day is usually filled with good spirits and lots and lots of food.
The first year Buck was in L.A. for the 4th of July, Bobby had hosted it at the firehouse, cooking for the entire team. The second year, Athena had hosted it at her house, inviting Buck, Hen, Chimney, Maddie, and Eddie over for the cookout in which, again, Bobby was cooking. Eddie, however, had declined the invite, claiming he was going to spend it with his own family but when Buck asked Christopher about it later, Christopher had informed him that Eddie had not gone with him to his Abuela’s and that Pepa had brought Christopher there. When he then questioned Eddie about it, the man had completely avoided answering. Buck filed it away as an Eddie Diaz mystery he’ll probably never get an answer to and moved on. This year, they all are scheduled to work.
Buck struts into the station, clothes bag slung over his shoulder. It’s going to be a long 24-hour shift but Buck isn’t going to let that ruin his mood. Bobby had promised to cook for everyone again and he’s honestly looking forward to it. Plus, if they’re lucky, they’ll be out on a call, outside, when the fireworks start. Of course, Buck doesn’t want a life-threatening call to happen just so he can watch the fireworks, but if there’s a scared cat stuck up in a tree then he’ll take it.
He walks into the locker room where Hen, Chimney, and Eddie are already halfway through changing. Buck tries to not watch Eddie as the other man gets dressed, approaching his own locker to get into his uniform. “Who’s ready for the 4th of July rush?” Buck asks enthusiastically, giving a quick glance towards Eddie who is currently shirtless.
Eddie gives him a wary, curious look. “What do you mean?”
“People are dumb on the 4th of July,” Hen answers for Buck as Buck forces himself to look away from Eddie and opens his locker to start changing. “There’s always more calls than on a usual day because people like to set off fireworks that they got illegally or play with firecrackers that end up blowing up in their hand or in their face or in their pants.”
Eddie’s head tilts at that last statement, blinking in confusion. “Their pants?”
Hen shakes her head. “You don’t want to know.”
Buck chuckles, shucking off his pants and pulling on his uniform bottoms. “I love the 4th of July.”
“More like you love Cap’s cooking,” Chimney states from behind him, shutting his locker a little too loudly.
“I do,” Buck agrees, pulling his shirt off and turning to Chimney. “But I also love everything else to do with the 4th of July.”
“Here we go,” Hen mumbles.
Buck turns to her, smile in place. “Come on Hen, you have to agree that fireworks are awesome.”
Hen gives him a small smile. “Okay, the 4th of July isn’t that bad but I just hate how stupid people get during it.”
“Well, I’m with Buck,” Chimney says. “I love the 4th of July. It’s one of the few days you actually have a valid excuse to get absolutely drunk off your ass.”
Buck turns to Eddie. “Eddie?”
Eddie looks up from where he was studying his button up to his uniform. “Hmm?”
Buck smiles at him. “Do you like the 4th of July?”
“I hate it.”
All of them look at Eddie with surprise. Buck’s eyes go wide in shock. “What! No, Eddie, no one can hate the 4th of July!”
“I’m pretty sure other countries hate it, Buck,” Hen comments.
“Okay, if you’re an American, you can’t hate it,” he amends. “You’re, like, obligated to like it.”
Eddie watches Buck as he slides on his button up. “Sorry, Buck, but I just don’t like the 4th of July.”
“But why?” he asks but Eddie just shrugs. “Okay, what about fireworks? Everyone loves fireworks. Hen?”
Hen finishes tying her boots and stands. “They’re pretty, I guess.”
“Come on, Hen!” Buck pouts at her. “I love fireworks! They’re amazing, you know! With all the colors and how big they can get.”
“They do have a certain appeal to them,” Chim mentions with a small laugh before turning towards Eddie who is staring absently into his locker. “Okay, Mister ‘I don’t like the 4th of July,’ what’s your opinion on fireworks?” Chim asks.
Eddie shrugs and scrunches up his nose in that way Buck finds adorable. “They’re loud.” He quickly looks at all of them before turning back to his locker to dig around in it.
Buck’s heart drops as realization starts setting in while Hen huffs a laugh, heading towards the door. “Yeah, and they scare animals all over.” She leaves the room, Chimney following her with an amused smile, both apparently oblivious to what Eddie is implying.
Buck watches them go, frown now set in place on his face. Turning back to Eddie, he watches silently as the man continues to dig through his locker, looking slightly panicked. Buck thins his lips, deep in thought, before reaching into his own locker and picking up a small packet of earplugs. He walks over to Eddie and holds them out. “Here.”
Eddie looks down at them, eyebrows furrowing in confusion. His eyes lift to Buck. “How’d you know?”
Buck shrugs. “Good guess.” Eddie gives him a thankful smile and takes the earplugs, fiddling with the package.
Eddie gestures towards his locker, not meeting Buck’s eyes. “I thought I had brought some but I guess I forgot. Why do you have some?”
Buck smiles at him reassuringly. “I wear them when I try to get some sleep here. I can still hear the bell if it goes off but not everything else.” Eddie nods at his explanation and Buck wishes he could make this easier on Eddie. He’s obviously feeling a little embarrassed. “What did you do last year?” Buck tries, hoping he won’t be shot down this time.
Eddie sighs heavily and shuts his locker, shoving the earplugs into his pocket for later. “I closed all the windows in the house, turned on the TV full volume, and blasted music in my ears.”
“Did it work?” Eddie just shrugs. “Are you going to be okay? I’m sure Bobby wouldn’t care if you went home.”
Eddie shakes his head, walking past Buck. “I can’t let this dictate my life, Buck. You guys need me today so I’m going to be here.”
“But Eddie-”
“No, Buck,” Eddie stops him. “I’ll be fine.” He walks away then, clearly ending the conversation there.
*~~~*
As Hen had predicted, it’s a busy day. Since eight in the morning to eight at night, there have been fifteen calls. From fires to car accidents to people having firecrackers blow up in their faces, everything that is going to happen seems to be happening. They are just getting back from their last call of a child stuck up in a tree that the nine-year-old decided to climb up, when they get another call of a possible drowning in a pool.
Buck has noticed how on edge Eddie has been all day; quiet, more so than usual, and hyperaware of his surroundings. He can’t seem to relax and as Buck sits next to him on the firetruck, he can feel just how stiff Eddie is holding himself. He wishes he knew how else to calm his best friend down but knows that anything he says won’t help in the slightest.
Buck nudges Eddie’s shoulders, getting his attention. “Hey, you might want to put the earplugs in now. The fireworks are going to be starting soon.”
Eddie nods and reaches into his pocket. He frowns, removes his hand, and reaches into his pocket on the other side. This hand also comes out empty. “They must have fallen out at some point.”
Buck is frowning now as well, full of concern. “You going to be okay?”
Eddie nods curtly. “Yeah, I’ll be fine.”
Buck can feel Bobby’s eyes on them from the front, the older man glancing over his shoulder. Neither he nor Eddie acknowledges Bobby’s look. Buck figures Bobby has probably figured out the problem already anyway.
It doesn’t take them much longer to arrive on the scene. Hen and Chimney pull the ambulance around, parking it in a way that will make transporting the injured party into the vehicle easier. They all rush over to the scene, following the wife of the man who almost drowned.
They get to work right away, Chimney doing chest compressions as Hen and Eddie work on hooking him up to fluids and air. The husband comes back quite quickly to everyone’s relief and coughs up water. Moving him onto a backboard and then to a gurney, they all make their way over to the ambulance, loading the man in and letting the wife follow. She says her thanks and Chimney shuts the back doors, Hen driving away with the sirens blaring. Overall, it’s a smooth mission and nothing goes wrong.
That is, until the first firework booms in the air, bright and loud.
Eddie flinches so violently, that he knocks into Buck, and, Buck not having expected that, they both go tumbling down to the ground. Buck lands on his bottom, catching himself with his hands and causing pain to shoot up into his arms from his wrists. Bobby is crouching in front of them, asking them if he’s okay and another firework soars in the night sky and explodes in a beautiful hue of blue.
Buck ignores Bobby’s questioning and turns to Eddie who is also sitting on the ground except that his legs are drawn up close to him and his head is dipped between his knees with his hands covering his ears. He’s stiffened up even more than he has been all day and Buck can see tremors running through his body. Buck scrambles up, reaches out to touch Eddie, but then stops short. He quickly pulls his hand back.
“Eddie?” he begins gently. “Eddie, it’s Buck. Can you hear me?”
Eddie doesn’t give Buck an answer, doesn’t even look up at him, but Buck can hear Eddie’s heavy breathing and quiet sobs. Bobby places a hand on Buck’s shoulder, getting his attention. “I need to get back. You got this?” Buck nods. “When he’s back, bring him home. You two can end your shift early.”
“Are you sure?” Buck asks.
Bobby nods towards Eddie. “Take care of him.” He then gets up and leaves, giving Eddie one last concerned look. Buck knows that if Bobby could, he would stay too, but he can’t. Not on one of their busiest days.
Buck watches Bobby leave before turning his attention back to Eddie. “Eddie? Can I touch you?” Still, he gets no answer. “I’m going to touch your knee, okay?”
More fireworks are shooting up in the sky, getting closer to the grand finale. He knows they aren’t helping the situation at all. Another loud and bright firework makes Eddie flinch again and his entire body shudders as a whimper escapes from his mouth.
Buck slowly stretches his arm out, gently placing a hand on Eddie’s knee. Eddie doesn’t react to it, doesn’t look up at Buck but also doesn’t jerk away from the touch so Buck figures it must be fine to do so. He continues to talk to Eddie, keeping his voice low and calm. “Eds, you’re out on a call. You’re in someone’s backyard, near the pool. What you are hearing are fireworks. They are not bombs, you’re no longer in Afganistan, you’re safe.”
The finale to the fireworks starts up and Eddie curls into himself more, pulling away from Buck’s hand. Buck doesn’t try to touch him again, waits the finale out, and then tries again when everything settles.
“Eddie, it’s still Buck. Can you hear me?” A small nod. “Okay, listen to my voice. Again, you are not in Afganistan anymore. You’re in L.A. and those were fireworks, not bombs. You’re safe. I’m here. You’re not in danger.” Eddie lifts his head some but doesn’t look at Buck. His eyes are far away, not really focusing on anything. “Can I touch you again?” Another small nod. Buck crawls a little closer, places a hand on Eddie’s shoulder.
“Can you feel the ground?” Eddie nods. “Can you feel my hand?” Again, a nod. “Okay, what do you see? What do you see around you, where you’re safe?”
It takes Eddie a few tries and Buck repeating the question again before he can answer him. “You.”
“What else?”
Eddie swallows and lifts a shaky hand to wipe the tears away. He’s still not very focused, blinking rapidly. “You.”
“Okay,” Buck says, moving on. “What can you hear. Can you hear me?”
“Yes.”
“What else can you hear? What else can you hear in this backyard where you’re safe? Where you’re safe with me? You’re safe.”
Eddie’s eyes flutter shut and his face scrunches in agony. “Open your eyes,” Buck tells him and he does. “Can I hug you?” Eddie nods and Buck maneuvers himself so he’s sitting down at an angle to Eddie, wrapping his arms lightly around the smaller man. He wants to be sure Eddie can still see him but also ground him more in the present by giving him more physical touch. “Now what can you hear besides my voice?”
Eddie is still shaking but his muscles relax. Still he doesn’t answer Buck, staring off into the distance. “Eddie?” Eddie snaps back.
“The pool. I can hear the…” a long pause as Eddie blinks. “The pool.”
“Okay, good. Can you hear the water in the pool?”
“Yeah.”
“Can you still hear me?”
“Yeah.”
“What can you smell?” Buck asks, moving onto the next sense. “What do you smell around you, here and now?” He carefully rubs a hand up and down Eddie’s bicep, gauging Eddie’s reaction. He doesn’t reject the movement so Buck continues doing it.
“I can smell…” Again, Eddie quiets, staring at the ground. His body is relaxing though so Buck decides that what he is doing must be working at least a little.
“Eddie, what do you smell?” he asks again.
Eddie blinks, doesn’t answer, and Buck asks for the third time. “I smell your cologne or… or deodorant.” He sinks into Buck, blinking slowly. “I smell… I can smell the pool. Freshly cut grass.”
“Good, now I want you to describe to me, if you could choose any place, where would you want to be at this very moment?” Buck chuckles. “It doesn’t even have to be attainable.”
Eddie licks his lips, rubs a hand slowly over his knee, and looks like he might dissociate again but then he starts talking, voice slow and slightly slurred. “At home with Christopher and you.”
“Yeah?” Buck smiles. “What would we be doing?”
Eddie does dissociate again, staying quiet for several minutes before Buck can get him back and ask the question once more. “Watching a movie.”
“What movie?”
“I don’t know.”
“Describe to me the scene you’re thinking.”
Eddie’s hand rubs over the ground and he lifts his hand to look at his palm. He stares at it for a few seconds before placing it down on the ground again. Buck repeats what he said. “Christopher would be sitting on the floor in a heap of blankets. You and I would be on the couch, sitting close.”
“Like this?”
Eddie nods. “Yeah. One of us would be holding the other and…” he trails off.
Buck runs a hand through Eddie’s hair, deciding to end it there. “Can you stand?”
Eddie swallows and nods. They both stand up, Eddie swaying in his spot. Buck can tell he’s not entirely back with him, the other man looking around his surroundings as if confused as to where he is. Buck orders an Uber and when it arrives, he carefully guides Eddie inside it.
They arrive at Eddie’s place and Buck immediately transports Eddie to his bed, helping him to undress and lie down in it. “You’re home now, Eddie. Do you know where you are?”
“Home,” he answers. “I’m home.” He’s coming back now, getting more alert. Still, he looks exhausted with his eyes droopy and slow movements. “Thank you for helping me, Buck.”
Buck sits down on the edge of the bed and runs a hand through Eddie’s hair. “I’ve got your back, Eddie.” He shrugs. “And next year, we’ll be more prepared. No more losing the earplugs.”
Eddie chuckles at that, eyes sparkling with amusement. “Deal.”
They stare at each other for a long time before Buck finally asks, “Do you want to talk about it?”
Eddie shakes his head. “No.” Buck nods, accepting that answer. “But I would like it if you stayed.”
“Yeah, of course, I’ll stay.”
“No, I mean in the bed.”
“With you?” Buck asks.
“I feel safer with you.” Eddie is avoiding eye contact but the statement makes Buck smile nonetheless.
“I’ll stay, then.”
Eddie smiles, small and soft, eyes closing slowly. “Thank you.”
Buck leans down and presses a kiss to Eddie’s temple. “Always.”
———————————————————————————————————–
A/N: And there you have it. Though I do think fireworks are pretty I also think they are obnoxious and loud, and, since they are literally bombs going off in the air, I can’t imagine Eddie not having some kind of reaction to them.
Thank you to this website that helped me write what Buck should do for Eddie during his flashback.
Thank you for reading!

Whumptober Day 25: Cranky
Fandom: Ace Attorney
Characters: Miles Edgeworth, Phoenix Wright, Trucy Wright, Athena Cykes, Apollo Justice
Notes: Post-DD. Established married!Wrightworth because what else did you expect? Miles has been taking time out of his schedule to care for the employees of the Wright Anything Agency after a particularly brutal cold season. He’s been doing great, he’ll swear on his life. The patience of a saint, that’s Miles Edgeworth for you. He is totally not going to completely lose it.
He couldn’t believe it. For the first time this week, Miles didn’t have to scrape perfectly decent breakfast, breakfast he made, into the garbage. He could have sworn it was proper etiquette for guests he and his husband so graciously welcomed in their home to at least try to clean their plates.
“They live alone, babe. It’ll do them good for us to extend some hospitality,” he remembered Phoenix saying. At first, Miles didn’t mind at all. He may not have been any Florence Nightingale, but he saw merit in caring for his husband’s colleagues while they were unwell. He didn’t even complain when the two infected his husband with a cold that reduced his voice to a hoarse crackle and kept Miles awake with hours of coughing and sneezing assaulting his ears. No, no. It was no trouble at all, really.
He could have sworn when he first welcomed Apollo and Athena as guests, he was up for anything they asked for. He could prepare soup with his eyes closed, and by the second day of Phoenix’s cold, Miles was very tempted to do so just so he could say he got something resembling sleep. As the number of hands helping him dwindled to zero, Miles’s energy was wearing a little thin. Just a little thin, though, not too much at all.
Then there was the texting. Since Miles was the only one in the house whose voice was audible, his cell phone was constantly blowing up with short, grammatically lacking text messages. Hardly any of them allowed him time to fulfill one person’s request without being bombarded with other unrelated tasks they expected of him. He could make tea and he could check pages of calculus homework, but not simultaneously; there was only one of him. He would do it again, though, really. Go ahead, ask him to care for ten sick people, and for a month this time. Just direct a hospital’s worth of patients to his house, why don’t you?
Oh, no, Miles wasn’t losing his patience at all. He was mature and collected, so he brought anything his family and guests asked for without a complaint. That was true, wasn’t it? Or did thoughts to himself about how tired he was getting from running around the house grabbing whatever anyone wanted count? He was doing so well the first three days of the arrangement, so surely at the tail end of the week his eyes shouldn’t be twitching from exhaustion he was most definitely not feeling.
“I’m really happy to finally taste your cooking, Mr. Edgeworth.” Athena’s recovered voice startled Miles. He had almost forgotten more people could speak than just him. “Trucy kept telling me you were a really good cook, and I’m definitely not disappointed.” Something about that felt underhanded, Miles was sure of it. She was doubting his skills as a cook, wasn’t she?
“You’ve been really good to us, Papa.” Trucy smiled. “Thank you so much!” Of course Trucy was the first to verbally thank him for his efforts. She was taught manners and was clearly not raised in a barn. And no, Apollo, emojis and ‘memes’ did not count.
“You’re very,” Miles heard his voice crack and cleared his throat, “you’re very welcome, Trucy.”
“Yeah, thank you so much, hon.” Phoenix was the second person Miles could count on for gratitude. What Miles really wanted to hear, however, was an apology for all the sleep he lost thanks to Phoenix’s poor volume control late at night. There was always something, be it sniffling, sneezing, or coughing that would start just as Miles thought he finally had some peace and quiet.
“Thanks.” Apollo said nothing besides that and continued eating the last of his toast. What a wordsmith, wasn’t he? A real Shakespeare.
“You’re both quite welcome as well.” Miles’s nose twitched ever so slightly as he spoke. “Are you all finished? I’d like to,” he cleared his throat again, “clean the dishes soon.” He knew no one would bother helping him with the task. They all had much more important things to do like watch television or play games on their phones.
Just as he thought, all responses were a chorus of confirming they were finished eating and not a single offer to help. Despite the fact they were all clearly more than ready to be back on their feet, Miles was on his own in carrying the pile of dishes to the counter by the sink. None of the dishes were his. He wasn’t hungry, and the lord knew he wasn’t about to be a hypocrite by committing the horrid act of wasting food. He would never be so ungrateful, so wasteful, so--
“Oh, I’d actually like a refill of orange juice.” Apollo asked, just as he always did since he arrived last Thursday.
“Your legs aren’t broken.” Miles snapped without even thinking about what he had just said.
“Woah, where did that come from?” Athena was taken aback by Miles’s harsh tone.
“YEAH, SOMEONE’S CRANKY!” Widget blurted in its usual loud and robotic tone, further irritating Miles.
“Would you mind telling that thing to put a sock in it?” Miles clenched his teeth, becoming more frustrated when Phoenix stopped him from reaching for his dishwashing gloves.
“Hey, if something’s bothering you, just tell us.” Phoenix wanted to de-escalate as well as he could. “Did something happen at work?”
“I wouldn’t know, Phoenix. I haven’t been in the office all week!” Miles was so caught up in the outburst he failed to hear how hoarse he sounded. He hardly thought anything when the strain caused him to cough.
“Oh, babe.” Phoenix’s expression softened. “You’re not feeling well, are you?” He kissed his husband’s forehead. “Mm, you’re warm, too.”
“Please, not in front of guests. Not to mention-- mention, hhh…” Miles turned away from Phoenix’s concerned gaze. “Hh’uurrssSHH” He sneezed in his elbow, leaving a damp spot on his pink pajama sleeve. He instinctively pressed a hand under his running nose, not doing anything to get Phoenix off his back. He wasn’t even done yet. “Hu’RRsshhooh! HH’RSSHOOH!” How disgusting.
“We can do the dishes, Papa!” Trucy offered. She looked at Apollo and Athena, who both nodded in agreement. “It’s only right to return the favor.” What a sweetheart she was, absolutely her father’s daughter.
“You’re going back to bed.” Phoenix put his head on Miles’s shoulder and embraced him from behind. “We’re not going to let you lift a finger.”
Miles found himself spacing out for the duration of Phoenix ushering him to bed. He really was out of sorts, wasn’t he? He couldn’t even remember stepping out of the kitchen. It was almost dreamlike to find himself bundled up in bed.
“Are you okay?” Phoenix waved his hand in front of Miles’s face. “It was way too easy to get you into bed and you haven’t said anything since we were in the kitchen.” He gently took Miles’s glasses and set them aside.
“Of course I’b dot okay.” Miles grumbled, turning on his right side. “I haved’t slept ihd days, we have the worst house guests I’ve ever had the displeasure of beetig, ahd by owd husbahd wod’t eved let be wash the dishes.”
“You’re a real ray of sunshine this morning.” Phoenix brushed Miles’s hair with his fingers. “My poor sick grouch of a husband.” He cooed.
“I’b dot a grouch.” Miles frowned, hardly supporting his claim.
“What would you call yourself, then?” Phoenix made a small hum. “With how you acted in the kitchen, I wouldn’t be surprised if you poked your head out of a trashcan and told us to scram.”
“I wasd’t by best, was I?” Miles knew that was the understatement of the year. That tickle in his throat that pestered him, admittedly since he went to bed last night, finally became a full-fledged cough. “I feel awful.” He croaked.
“I know, babe.” Phoenix sighed. “It’s our turn to take care of you, now. You did so much all by yourself, we’re gonna show you how grateful we are. You’ll even have Apollo and Athena to-”
“Doh.” Miles said firmly. “They’re goi’g hobe. Today.”
“Alright, alright. Then it’ll be just me and Trucy.”
“That’s better.”
Phoenix helped Miles sit up so he could fluff the pillow behind him. He gave a sympathetic smile as he listened to Miles’s thick, hardly effective sniffling.
“You must be so tired.” Phoenix let Miles lie back down. “I’m sorry if I kept you up all night.”
“I ab ahd you did.” Miles confirmed flatly.
Miles just closed his eyes for a moment, only to be disturbed by something poking into his mouth. He made a soft grunt, dismissing it until that horrible beeping had him opening his eyes again. He watched a blurry figure resembling Phoenix walk outside his field of vision, only for the figure to return a few moments later. He felt something cold and damp rest on his forehead and flinched from the dramatic contrast in temperature.
“Is it too cold?” Phoenix’s voice was muffled by Miles’s congestion-affected hearing. When Miles shook his head in response, Phoenix gave a sympathetic smile and gently adjusted the cool compress in place. He looked over at the doorway and spotted Athena and Apollo watching from outside the room. He mouthed something along the lines of ‘he’s resting.’
“I should apologize.” Miles said groggily. “The way I acted was terribly rude.”
“Hey, hey.” Phoenix shushed his husband softly. “You weren’t feeling like yourself this morning. Athena and Apollo aren’t strangers, and Trucy and I definitely know you wouldn’t act like that on a regular basis.” He kissed his warm cheek. “You were just a little cranky, is all.”
“That’s dot ad excuse.” Miles closed his eyes again. “It was udcalled for.”
"Mr. Edgeworth?" Athena couldn't help but speak up. "We accept your apology, but the boss is right. We know you don't always act like that."
"You were pretty rude." Apollo muttered just before Athena gave him a light nudge with her elbow. "But, uh," he scratched the back of his head, "we probably deserved it."
Miles refused to have a serious discussion sounding like he did, so he yanked about five or six tissues from the end table tissue box. The amount seemed to be just enough by the time he was done. He checked the remaining contents of the box before tossing the used tissues in the trash bin.
“No one deserved the harsh words I used.” What Miles’s voice lost in congestion was made up for in hoarseness. “It wasn’t right.”
“You can’t be on model behavior all the time, hon.” Phoenix massaged Miles’s hand with his thumb. He noticed Miles starting to look annoyed again. “What’s wrong?”
“You’re too nice about this.” Miles grumbled. His mood wasn’t completely improved. He would come up with more excuses to wallow in excess guilt if he wasn’t so, so very tired.
The next thing the trio of lawyers heard from him was one of his ‘world famous’ snores, as Phoenix jokingly described them when Miles wasn’t in the room. Miles was completely out cold when Trucy tiptoed in, intending on telling him the dishes were clean and put away.
“Papa’s asleep?” Trucy whispered and Phoenix answered with a nod. “Don’t worry,” she directed her assurance to Apollo and Athena, “he’ll be in a better mood when he wakes up, I promise.”
. . .
It was two in the afternoon when Miles finally woke up. All built up grumpiness washed away in his sleep and with a clear head, he felt as if he were in good enough shape to climb out of bed and see if his family needed anything. Just as he reached for his glasses, he found an envelope that wasn’t there before. It wasn’t sealed, so the card inside slid out easily into his hand.
The card was handmade, covered in variations of ‘Thank You’ written in different colored pencils. It was easy to tell whose message was whose, especially Athena’s multilingual expressions of gratitude and Phoenix’s barely legible handwriting. Miles felt himself tear up a little, not noticing Phoenix and Trucy standing by the bedroom doorway.
“We thought you’d appreciate that.” Phoenix was holding a steaming mug of tea, likely made just recently. He either had very strong husband intuition or just planned on waking Miles up when it was ready. He took a couple tissues from the box on the end table to use as a makeshift coaster to set the mug down on. “You should also know our guests left today as promised.”
“Before they left, we all made that card.” Trucy had her hands behind her back. “It was Polly’s idea!”
So Apollo was grateful after all. No, no. Miles wasn’t going to let himself fall back into that sort of attitude.
“We were going to make you soup but we didn’t know for sure if you would be hungry.” Phoenix handed the mug over to Miles, who accepted it gratefully. He watched Miles take a moment to inhale the steam with that smile he always had whenever Phoenix made him tea. There was a quality in Phoenix’s brews that Miles could never replicate no matter how hard he tried. “I’m glad to see you smiling again.”
“I think tea will suffice, thank you.” Miles’s voice was in worse shape than before. If this was how he sounded the first day into this cold, he wasn’t at all looking forward to the upcoming days that would surely go downhill from here. “I would hate to waste any of your cooking.”
“Oh yeah,” Phoenix chuckled nervously, “sorry about all that food you had to throw out. While you were sleeping, Trucy and I realized that must have bothered you a lot.” Indeed it did, as ashamed as Miles now felt for letting it get to him.
“I accept your apology,” Miles took a sip from the mug, “if only because you make a wonderful cup of tea.” He laughed briefly, causing a vibrating sensation in his chest that made him need to cough.
“Oh! Right!” Trucy presented what she had been hiding behind her back: a brand new jar of vapor rub. “We picked this up today! Do you want to put this on yourself or should Daddy do it?”
“I think I can do this myself.” Miles set down the mug so he could take the jar. He had just started dating Phoenix when he first experienced the substance’s decongestant properties. Phoenix applied it the first few times, but Miles was never a fan of how Phoenix knew exactly what parts of his chest were ticklish. He did, however, like how Phoenix was not at all judgmental about his unfamiliarity with the product.
“I did say you wouldn’t be lifting a finger.” Phoenix ruffled his husband’s hair. “I’m kidding, of course. Just know if there’s anything you need, you say the word and we’ll get it for you.”
“And I would like you to know,” Miles kissed Phoenix’s cheek, “if I’m too demanding, just tell me.”
“I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
Phoenix was just going to pretend he didn’t see Miles’s devilish smirk just then.

Inside the Robotics Lab
//I am not much of a writer, so forgive me my questionable attempt at writing out what happened inside the Robotics Lab the day before the HAT-1 launch.
The Phantom was standing motionlessly in the Robotics Lab. In his mind he went through the various options to hide this turn of events. He did not plan on taking a life. It tends to be more trouble than it is worthwhile. Once more he reminded himself to get unwanted witnesses out of the way by someone who knows better what they are doing. In this instance, however, he did not had the luxury of waiting until his request was fulfilled.
He had been sitting over Dr. Cykes personal tablet when she had entered the lab unexpectedly. She was not meant to appear until past 2 PM. Of course she had noticed his unauthorized access to her private property and questioned him about it. He had not been so sure how to explain it and before he knew it, she had made it awfully clear to him that she suspected him of being just who he actually is. Before she could have fled the room, he had managed to hold on to her arm and threw her away from the door. To keep her from escaping, he had taken the katana on the display table nearby and struck it right into her chest.
He kept staring down at the body and observed how the pool of blood below grew slowly bigger with every second. He did not leave any prints, so his best bet was to simply leave and tamper with the hallway camera recording while he waited for his scheduled return later today. He adjusted the fit of his gloves when he suddenly heard the faint rolling of wheels on the sticky floor outside. The very second he thought of the robot, Ponco opened the door.
The robot must already have registered a heartbeat in the room but he still had a couple of seconds before it was able to identify whom it belonged to. He turned away as to avoid his face or ID-card to be scanned when his eyes fell onto Dr. Cykes' jacket at his very feet. In an instant he threw the jacket over his own shoulders and in another he grabbed the Noh mask from the wall and slid it over his face. He left is own hat on the display table. The mask limited his vision but he still managed to pull out his handkerchief and drape it over the dead woman's face. That very moment Ponco greeted her beloved mother.
"Hello, Mommy Metis. I notice it is a little untidy in here. I will clean up after my recharge, yes?"
Of course the Phantom did not intend to respond to the robot. Now that it thought Dr. Cykes was still alive, he adjusted his plan slightly. He would wait until it was recharging and -then- leave, without his make-shift disguise. People started to move again in the Space Centre but he hardly expected yet another visitor the otherwise secluded Robotics Lab.
"Mom?"
It was young Athena, standing in the doorway. A silent slur passed the Phantoms lips. It was not because his stress levels started to rise, despite being caught red-handed TWICE. It was a mere statement of the predicament he was in, from a logical viewpoint. He could not just kill every single person that walked in here one after another. So what to do?
"What... what have you done. Why is she on the floor like that?"
Athena started to shake. She could not quite understand what had happened and she saw her mother in an unusual, scary way down on the floor and a stranger with a mask on his face standing next to her. She was terrified.
"TELL ME!", she shouted at him. Athena grabbed the small knife from the open tool kit on the floor and approached the Phantom, drawing his attention. Noticing the knife in her hand, he stepped back. He could not quite anticipate what she was about to do. Usually this girl just kept to herself, too shy to interact with any of the many employees at the Space Centre. Seeing her holding a knife at him appeared like a joke to him. A joke that suddenly turned very real, as Athena jumped at him slashing the knife across his jacket. He took a quick step backwards to evade the blade but stepped onto Dr. Cykes' kimono. For the split moment the fabric under his shoe caught his attention, Athena lounged forward again and drove the knife into the back and right through his right hand.
There was no outcry or contortion of his features. The Phantom felt a strange pulling sensation in his hand and a tinge of cold, but no pain. A "hng" expressed his annoyance over this unexpectedly successful attack. He attempted to shift his stance once more but got irritated by the kimono again. Loosing his balance, he fell backwards and down onto his buttocks. He had caught his fall automatically with both of his hands and pushed himself back up a moment later. He reached out with his left and grabbed Athena's wrist. Athena's painful squeal sounded more like a shriek in his mind. He raised her hand up high to expose her torso and kicked her right into the chest. Athena fell backwards onto the floor, knocking her head hard as she touched down. The kick robbed her of all ability to scream or even just breathe and a moment after that she lost consciousness, leaving nothing but silence.
The Phantom stared down at his own hand. He expected to find the knife stuck neatly between his index and middle metacarpal but it was not. It was laying on the floor where he had come down a minute ago. The blood oozed from both sides and left a small trail of drops on the floor. Any attempt to move his fingers remained unsuccessful. He stepped back from the two bodies and leaned onto the small display table at the wall. For a moment he concentrated on his bodies reaction to the injury. He felt and heard his heart racing inside his chest and despite the coldness in his hand, he noted a bit of sweat above his brow. He was not quite aware of his immediate surroundings but he could clearly hear the clock ticking in this room and the buzzing of electricity as Ponco stood in her station. He figured he was in pain. In a mindless movement he brought both hands to his sides to place them gently on the surface of the table but by doing so now, his bloodied right came to rest neatly on a cold, rough surface instead. The Phantom voices his annoyance yet again as his eyes land on the moon rock. He swore he could hear his own hand peeling off the stone with a slightly slurp as he left his blood behind.
At the very least, he knew exactly what he could do to get out of this.
He took the mask off, hung it back and then reached for the First Aid Kit at the wall behind the robot charging station. He took a bandage and tied it round his hand tightly. That would be enough for now. He put on one of the latex gloves over his left hand and used some of the compresses to wipe up his own blood from the smooth floor, the display table and even Athena's own hand. He turned the glove inside out, securing the bloody compresses safely inside and used another compress and second glove to secure the knife in the same way. He then put both into his pocket. As for the moon stone... he could not take it off site but he COULD hide it and have it be taken care of by someone else. He glanced at the Hope Capsule. He was scheduled to return later today to get the capsule and store it inside the rocket, ready for the launch tomorrow. And that's just what he intended to do. He carefully opened the capsule and placed the moon rock inside. The weight of the capsule had increased but since no one else was to carry it, it would be no problem. He doubted anyone knew just how light it was meant to be, anyway.
The Phantom takes one last look around the room. It was now just about 10 past 2 PM. Dr. Cykes laid in her own blood, no prints were left on the katana. The robot thought she was alive in the room when it came in. Athena was knocked out. His blood has been wiped, the knife was in his possession, the moon rock was hidden. He still had the jacket but that would be returned shortly. Yes, there was nothing else to take care of. He pulled his own hat deep into his face and left the lab, sneaking back to his position at work.

adam hudson and the quest of athena
tw suicide, abuse, eye horror/injury, physical punishment, fire, death
[[SCENE ONE]]
Even when Adam trekked on at dawn, leaving Epinieos behind, he had no clue what was in store for him. Athena hadn’t felt inclined to tell him anything beyond the fact that she had something long term in mind for him and where to meet her for more information. It wasn’t hard to find her considering the forest beyond the borders didn’t have any other olive trees. When he found the tree, he approached, slowing his steps, waiting for the goddess to appear. Adam paused when she didn’t. There was a rustle behind him and he turned, hand on his cross, ready to pull out a sword.
A dark-haired guy around his age, maybe older, stepped from behind from branches he was swatting away. “Holy shit,” he muttered as he brushed the debris from his jacket. Apparently he was too caught up in himself to notice Adam, and when he did, his brows set downwards in confusion. “Hey, you fixed my car.”
Adam gave a slow nod. “Probably.” Trying to place the guy was a moot effort. “Are you here for something?”
“I’m pretty sure I’m going on the quest with you unless you’re here for no goddamn reason.” The guy was a bit on the rough side, but he was straightforward enough and Adam could work with that. “I’m Murphy Fiennes, son of Aphrodite. You?” The pomade in Murphy’s hair that held his well-done curls was enough to let Adam know that.
“Adam Hudson, son of Ares, legacy of Hephaestus. Nice to meet you.” Idly, Adam wondered why Murphy hadn’t been surprised to see him.
Before he could mull on the thought, Athena stood before him. The form she was in was different from the last one, but he knew it was her. The steely gray eyes were the same. “Adam. Murphy.” She addressed cooly. Adam’s back straightened at her attention, while Murphy raised a hand in greeting. [1:24 PM] “I appreciate you both being here and accepting my request of you despite the conflict of your own parentage. That in mind, what I ask has very much to do with the helm.”
If Adam were a dog, his ears would have been pricked forward at the words that had left her lips.
“Sides have been drawn, naturally, but the problem is that who is on my side isn’t as veracious as I hope.” The eyes she had on Adam somehow made him feel a weight compress against his chest. Was that just something she did innately? “I would like you both to attend to Hephaestus' Forge.” Finally, she turned her gaze from them and stared at the olives above. “I have reason to believe he might have stolen the helm to set me up.”
“Why would he do that?” Interrupting Athena, Murphy had every ounce of arrogance any good-looking person had and it was bothering Adam more than usual.
“My half-brother despises Ares more than he cares for me. But that is none of your concern. All I require of you two is to search his domain for the helm or see if he has anything to do with it.”
For the first time, Adam spoke. “You want me to spy on my grandfather?” Nothing about him said espionage. It felt traitorous.
Athena’s eyes dropped to him. “Who are you loyal to, Adam Hudson? If it is not to me, then why are you here?”
“I am,” Adam stressed. “I’m goin—”
“Then if you are, you would see that I do not ask stupid things for stupid reasons. You are not spying on Hephaestus, you are clearing his name. Just as you are trying to clear your father’s name. Isn’t that the reason you are really here?”
The force she spoke with was hard to argue or even defend himself against. Adam swallowed, choosing to remain unmoving. It was enough of an answer for her. [1:24 PM] “Good. Despite being a child of Ares, Hephaestus will take to you as you are his grandchild. And Murphy, your charmspeak has always been a certain weakness against him. If either of you are caught, you must not tell him of whom your quest had originated from. Neither of you, I imagine, are keen on the war escalating by your hand and that would no doubt happen if he discovers I sent you.”
“Got it.” Murphy saluted.
Adam didn’t hesitate this time. “I swear on the River Styx.”
For once, Athena seemed to be pleased with him and she wished him good luck before disappearing.
Setting off on their journey now, Murphy lightly elbowed Adam. “I can’t believe you had to one up me in front of Athena.”
“I can’t believe you interrupted her.”
Murphy grinned and took a larger stride than Adam, setting out to lead. “Well, anyways! Where even is Heph’s Forge?”
The answer amused Adam as the crestfallen look on Murphy was predictable. “Under a volcano.”
[[SCENE TWO]]
It took four days to get to the workshop, which was actually great time. A few monsters had come out of the woodwork for them, but between him and Murphy, they were holding their own well. It surprised Adam how quick he took to his chatty companion, but it was hard not to feel appreciative of someone sharing in the same life and death experience.
“I know we’ve talked about this before, but do you think it’s going to be terrible in our rooms? I feel like it’s going to be terrible.” Even as they squeezed through boulders and slipped through the crevice of the volcano, Murphy had to talk. “Honest to Gods, it’s going to be a slab of rock and lava covering the walls. I can’t sleep in the heat. I get so sweaty. Adam, Adam. I get sweaty.” [1:24 PM] “Pretty bold of you to assume he’s even gonna give us rooms.” That was a possibility, but Adam wasn’t going to let it happen anyways.
“What can I say—” A piece of the path broke off under Murphy’s foot, revealing the magma underneath and showing them how thin the layer they were walking on was. His voice shook, “I’m an optimist.”
From across the way, Adam heard a familiar voice. “Adam.”
Turning his carefully, Adam saw Hephaetus standing along another path, appearing smeared with grime and looking as if he was on his way from one project to another.
“Hi. Give me a sec.”
Having Hephaestus watching them made even Murphy scuttle forward with haste. Finally, they reached him and Adam took the lead in greeting them.
“Hi sir. I know this was unexpected and rude, but I was actually hoping that I could apprentice under you for some time. I just graduated college and I thought taking some time to learn from you was the right thing to do. I don’t plan on burdening you any more than that and if all you wanted to do was tell me to do things, I can do that too.” Adam was polite and straight to the point. He didn’t know his grandfather beyond some shared conversation in a Lowe’s warehouse, but Hephaestus had always appeared to appreciate that in him. Their talks, after all, had never broached beyond mechanics. [1:25 PM] Hephaestus was silent, lips pursed as he stared down at Adam. Then he jerked his chin towards Murphy. “And him?”
“I’m Murphy!”
“He’s a friend. He didn’t want me coming alone.” That sounded a little pathetic. “Things have been more dangerous recently.” That was a little better.
“I’d really love it if you could let us stay. Mostly me. I’m hoping for a sauna room.”
Hephaestus didn’t need to hear anything more from him. “Aphrodite’s kid. What a pair you two are,” he spoke under his breath. For a moment, it looked like he wanted to say no, but he began walking and gave a quick gesture to follow.
“Why do you call him ‘sir’?” Murphy whispered as they trailed after the god. [1:25 PM] [[SCENE THREE]]
It was hard to say how long they’d been there. Time moved differently in the cave. Not for any special reason besides not having a sky overhead to regulate their body clocks. But things were good for the most part.
Hephaestus didn’t spend a lot of time with Adam in the beginning, but he seemed to have warmed up to him a little, lingering nearby whenever Adam struggled with his task. Even though Ares was the one who took on his adopted dad’s form, he couldn’t help but be reminded of him with Hephaestus. It’d been a long time since Adam really got to hang out with his dad—First, he had to go to Camp Halfblood, then he had to live in Epineios. That didn’t leave a lot of room besides long visits. So he missed this. He missed not having to be the one in control.
But that was just something he pretended in brief moments because Adam had other, bigger responsibilities. The workshop was huge and it almost felt like Adam would never finish looking. He was just glad Murphy was here to share half the work. They’d split up locations to go through and they’d convene at night in their shared room.
“I think the helm is here, Adam,” Murphy whispered in a low voice, across his own bed.
They hadn’t heard or found anything about the helm since they got there. This was a first and had Adam alert.
“What’d you mean?” Adam asked, already frowning, lowering the shirt he was folding. [1:25 PM] “I was in the boiler room and I overheard Alkon tell Eurymedon that Ares is going to get what’s coming to him. That Hephaestus is gonna make sure of it.”
That more than put Adam on edge. He hesitated, taking a moment to think of a plan on how to go forward.
“It’d be so dumb if he took it.” Murphy muttered. “You know? Like just ‘cause he has beef with Ares, is there really a point to starting a civil war and getting everyone involved?”
Adam stayed silent.
“I just think this whole war thing is stupid and there’s no reason Athena would do anything bad because she’s like, the brains, you know?”
Adam bit his cheek.
“Her whole thing is like fairness and justness. Dude—” Murphy hit Adam’s knee, making him look up. “I feel like I’ve been talking to a tree all this time. Why don’t you ever say what you think about anything?”
It seemed to come out of nowhere, but it was probably because Adam had been too lost in thought. He took in Murphy’s frustration and he could tell it’d been something that had been stewing. “You know, I don’t like to talk unnecessarily, Murphy.”
Murphy rolled his eyes and he was about to say something, but Adam continued to the other boy’s pleasure.
“The war is stupid. All war is. I want to find the helm and end it.”
“Oh yeah, if you find it, I bet your dad would make you immortal or something. You’d have to get rewarded for ending a fucking war.” Murphy sighed, dramatically. “I bet Athena would get us something nice when we get back. I heard some dude got a flamethrower once, but like, a crazy indestructible one or something.”
Adam finished folding the shirt and put it off to the side. They still had to think and plan something out, but they couldn’t do anything right now.
“I thought you wanted to meet your mom.”
The perpetual grin on Murphy’s face faded. There was a pause. “Well, what do you think the fucking flamethrower is for?” [1:25 PM] The question ended in a cackle that made Adam snort. Murphy’s opinion of Aphrodite had swayed every other day, but it wasn’t hard for Adam to tell where Murphy really stood about it. After all, a person wasn’t ambivalent about things for nothing.
“So what are you going to do with all that glory? Are you finally going to get a girlfriend? Boyfriend? Themfriend?” Murphy raised his index finger stopping Adam from speaking. His gaze was flat and unamused. “Or are you gonna get a cat? One you didn’t find off the street.”
“You know, you have a lot of perceptions of me. More than I’d like any person to have. I might get a cat, but I’d have to check in with Audrey. And even then, our stray might not care for a friend. Besides that, I don’t care about anything else. I’ll do what I have to do to end the war so we can all stop worrying about each other.”
Murphy gave Adam an uncertain look. “That always kind of confused me about you. I really thought Ares kids were supposed to thrive in conflict or something. You don’t seem like any Ares kids I know.”
Adam flexed his hand. “You might be getting it confused with just having the ability to manipulate rage. But yeah, I get that a lot.” Frankly, he was never sure how to feel about whether it was a good thing or a bad one. It always felt insulting either way. “I do,” Adam answered.
“Do what?”
“I do like conflict. I like...Not holding back. There’s a rush of adrenaline and freedom that’s hard to recreate. I like pushing things too far. I like hitting things until something bleeds. I want things to hurt. I have for a long time.”
There was a silence between them before Murphy spoke again. “You sound kind of like a psycho.” [1:25 PM] Adam gave Murphy a small smile. “Yeah, well, it runs in my blood in more ways than one. But that’s part of the reason I stop myself.”
Murphy tapped his fingers along his chin, feigning a caricature of a therapist. “Go on.”
It really was nice to have Murphy here with him in the trenches. The months would have been more bleak if he were alone. Murphy was his friend now. Maybe his closest one, even if he wasn’t Murphy’s.
Giving a small laugh, Adam stretched up, giving a slight reprieve from its tenseness. “I used to get the shit beaten out of me when I was a kid. Everyone in my family is trash.” Adam collapsed backwards on his bed, staring up at the dark slate ceiling. “I don’t want to be like that. I want to be better.”
Through his peripheral Adam could see Murphy staring at him. His next words made Adam choke back a laugh: “I wish you were gay.” He grinned. “Or you know, something close to it.”
“Who knows, I haven’t really thought about it.”
“What do you mean you haven’t thought about it? Everyone thinks about it. Well, not everyone, but you get what I’m saying.”
“I get it. I just know I’m not in that place yet.” The more specific answer was an amalgamation of reasons Adam just couldn’t sort and didn’t think it was important enough to try to.
Murphy nodded and turned over on his bed to face Adam. “I guess. Does that mean you haven’t kissed anyone?”
Adam raised a hand as he settled back into his bed, pulling the covers over himself. “We’re not that close, Murphy.”
“Oh, so you want to kiss me?”
“I’m not in your league.”
“Yeah, that’s true. Also I’m not gay.”
“Murphy, what?” [1:25 PM] “I have a girlfriend. I’m just a straight dude who likes to talk and occasionally assumes all my friends are in love with me. Clearly, Adam.” Murphy’s eyes were closed, relaxed, so he couldn’t see Adam squinting over in the dark. “Anyways I just like lying.”
Somehow they had circled back to the pointless jabber Murphy liked and Adam gave an amused breath of air as a reply before he turned over to face the wall.
“Maybe I’ve been lying to you the whole time. Maybe my name isn’t even my name. It’s probably Steve or something. Or Zack, like from Saved by the Bell—Did you hear about Screech?”
“Goodnight Steve.”
“Hey, actually. I think tomorrow while you’re with Hephaestus, I can try talking to the Kabeiroi Boys. They’re pretty good to charmspeak. I’ll let you know from there what I’ve got. You’re doing all the hard manual labor anyways.”
The gears in his head were turning, going over the idea. “Yeah, that sounds good.”
“Of course it does. Night Adam.”
“You’re a good partner.”
“I have a girlfriend.”
Adam laughed again into the dark before finally letting himself doze off. [1:26 PM] [[SCENE FOUR]]: MURPHY’S POV
It was easy to make up the lie to Adam the next day—that it’d only been a prank Hephaestus was planning on Ares, a false alarm. Of course, Murphy hadn’t actually found anything. It was just that Adam really didn’t share enough for him to figure the guy out.
The talk with Adam had given Murphy a little more perspective. It was enough to let him know that Adam was probably in the clear. There was still a niggling of doubt coming from the admission of hate he had fessed up to, but that’d been the only thing. Murphy was about 90% sure his companion didn’t have the helm and though Adam had thought they should clear Hephaestus now, Murphy insisted on staying a little longer to give time for Adam to convince him of the other ten.
Despite Adam’s impression, Murphy’s own quest was different from his. He’d known it from the start when Athena had come to him and told him how she suspected the son of Ares. She sent him with Adam on the chicanery of a quest to read into the real suspect. There weren’t supposed to be any hiccups to his quest unless Adam really did have the helm—He didn’t think Adam would get caught in the Dupe Quest.
Adam stumbled into the room Murphy was in, Hephaestus following behind, an imposing figure. Murphy remembered a miniscule warmth to them when he talked with Adam, but it was gone now. The gaze on his face was as hard and black as coal.
“What am I supposed to do with two liars? Arrogant demigods who’ve come into my home and rifle through my things? I should have known. You are your father—Despicable.”
Murphy turned to Adam, staring at him with wide eyes, trying to ask for an explanation. How’d he get caught? What had happened? The other boy just stared forward, jaw locked.
“Well?” Hephaestsus looked between them. “Did you find what you were looking for? What was it? Who sent you?” [1:26 PM] Adam wasn’t saying anything, so Murphy stepped up, raising his hands. “We weren’t doing anything. It’s just a misunder—”
“Shut up. Your pretty words don’t work on me, son of Aphrodite.” Murphy could see the god’s nose flaring as he glowered down at them. “Only one of you’s getting to go back as a warning, so who’s it going to be?”
“I’ll stay,” Adam spoke, volunteering himself.
Hephaestus’ eyes narrowed, thinly. “No one is staying.”
He and Adam shared a look. Murphy’s mind was racing, trying to find a way out of this. He was coming up short. Camp prepared him for monsters, not for Gods.
“Who sent you?” A fire combusted throughout his clenched fist, causing a more immediate panic.
The name slipped from Murphy’s mouth. “Ares. Ares sent us.”
He didn’t mean to damn Adam, but justification began pouring into his mind—Only one of them was getting out and it was better this way, wasn’t it? Adam was the one who got caught anyways? The quest Murphy was on was the real mission, Adam’s didn’t matter. There was still a small percent Adam was the helm thief. Wait, Adam was good with getting out of situations. He could figure this out for the both of them. It was fine, Murphy wasn’t damning him, he was buying Adam time.
“Your father?” Hephaestus uttered.
“He didn’t.” Murphy’s heart clenched. He wasn’t expecting Adam to tell the truth, he’d sworn on the Styx.
“So Murphy is lying?”
“I’m not! It was Ares. He sent us to find the helm here!” Murphy’s eyes were on the god, hoping to Aphrodite, begging that his charmspeak would work. “Who else would send us here?”
There. He could see Hephaestus believe him. The wrath was on Ares. And on Adam. He stared at Adam, pleading him to say something to get them out of this. But Adam didn’t say anything at all. [1:26 PM] Hephaestus grunted. “I want to hear you say it, Adam. Tell me it was Ares.”
“Adam, tell him. Say something!” Murphy hissed. Why wasn’t Adam saying anything?
“It wasn’t Ares.”
“Tell me or Murphy dies now.”
The silence was both longer and quicker than Murphy had ever felt. But the fire that engulfed him was the last thing he recalled.
[[SCENE FIVE]]: ADAM’S POV
“Was it worth it?” Hephaestus asked, voice harsh and sharp, as Adam stared at the pile of ash where Murphy had been standing.
Adam...His morals hadn’t allowed Ares to take the blame for it, but at the same time, he had a duty to his quest not to out Athena. Weighing even heavier was the potential of escalating the war. Of it being time to fight against his friends. And Adam...Didn’t want to set the keg. So he stayed silent and he let Hephaestus smote Murphy.
“Kill me too,” Adam’s voice cracked through his raw throat. “Kill me too,” he repeated with more certainty.
“No. That’s your punishment.” He jerked his chin towards Murphy’s spot. “You’ll carry that forever.”
“That’s not a punishment! That’s not a fair punishment!” Adam snapped, feeling all the heat rise to his face. “You’re supposed to take it out on me!” “Fair? An eye for an eye then.” There was no other warning before Hephaestus took Adam’s left eye. Adam held the place where his eye had been, cringing over it. “Since you want to keep your eye on me, I’ll keep it then.” He turned his back towards Adam as he made for the door. “Go. You’ve completed your quest.” [1:26 PM] [[SCENE SIX]]: ATHENA’S POV
Athena plucked a dark olive from the tree above. She turned it over in thought. It was much too ripe—Far overdue to be picked. She peered up once more to get a glimpse of the son of Ares’ back as he headed back into town.
The quests she had sent both boys on ended one of the few ways she imagined it would. The children of Ares and Aphrodite on her side had made her suspicious of them both, though the Ares one had more of the cleverness and unpredictability that made her paranoid of him most.
It had been fairly simple. She sent Adam under the impression her suspicion was on Hephaestus and she sent Murphy to assess Adam. It seemed Adam was about done with his quest, obviously finding nothing on Hephaestus. With their time almost over, Athena had Hephaestus informed about the spies in his midsts. The real test of loyalty lied there and Adam had passed with flying colors. She could trust him now. Trust was priceless in war and the cost of it had been a sacrifice that she could afford to make.
The son of Ares was a good ally to have. And he would even have her gifted eyepatch on him forever, allowing him the same sense of depth perception. He would be grateful to her always.
His back faded from view and Athena vanished, content with the turnout.

This wasn’t on the list but I figure it would work the same way as “Oh fuck, oh FUCK.” Either Hanzo/Doomfist or Lúcio/Reinhardt with “Dammit. GODDAMMIT!”
Sorry, this took forever, I got slammed with school work and I’m *this* close to dying mentally and physically.
Also I hope it’s okay I did some Gencio instead, I’m not really comfortable with either of those ships and I haven’t had a chance to write some of the green bois yet.
Lúcio barely hears his music over the blood rushing throughhis ears.
Gotta get therefaster. Gotta help him before it’s toolate.
He cranks up his speed boost even faster and wall ridesaround the tight corners of Dorado’s streets.
He thought the team was in the clear and ready to ship backto base when everyone realized they were still missing Genji.
Gunfire over the comms. The pings of bullets deflecting off of Genji’s sword. The cracks of bullets ripping through Genji’sarmor. Lúcio was off before anyone couldeven think of stopping him.
Athena gives him directions without prompting. Somehow she knows how important Genji is toLúcio. It seems like most people did bythe lack of yells in his ear to get back to the ship. He thought he was doing well, keeping hisfeelings for the cyborg on the down low. Genji never seemed interested in being anything more than friends soLúcio was fine with being just that.
Although, now all he can think about are all the times hehad a chance to tell Genji but didn’t. Maybe he should have.
A left, a right, and one more left, and he finds a badlydamaged omnic with a fluorescent orange skeleton painted on standing over Genji. Lúcio doesn’t hesitate as he knocks the omnicback with a loud burst from his amplifier, shattering as they hit the wall. He switches his music from speed boost tohealing and drops down next to Genji.
“Hey there man, what did I tell you about scratching yourarmor?” he says with a forced ease.
“I- I think this is a little more than a scratch,” Genjisays with a shuttering breath.
“Nah, it’s fine, you’re fine.” Lúcio fights to keep the waver out of hisvoice as he pulls out his emergency first aid kit and gets to work. Angela’s been helping him learn more firstaid and medical techniques to be more effective in the field and in the medbay. Though most of the practice he’shad has been on simulations and dummies. Nothing could prepare him for the amount of blood and oil and mechanicalfluids spreading out around Genji. “You’refine. You’re gonna be fine.”
“Lúcio-”
“The team’s already on their way. We all heard the attack on the comms so theyshould be here soon.” He pries off adamaged piece of paneling from Genji’s side and injects a dose of nanobots.
“Lúcio-”
“Don’t worry about the payload. It was already secure by the time this wentdown. So you get one hundred percent ofmy attention and-”
“Lúcio!”
Lúcio hesitates for a second as he looks up from the woundshe was bandaging. Somehow Genji managedto take his mask off without Lúcio noticing and is now fixing him down with asteady stare.
“Do you want to go on a date?”
“…What?”
“Dinner? Or maybejust coffee? Whatever you arecomfortable with,” Genji says between labored breaths.
“…Are you serious?”
“Well, they say there is no time like the present, and I- Ifigured I should at least ask before it’s too late.”
Okay, maybe this pining wasn’t as one sided as Lúciothought. Though this was not the way hewanted to find out. He turns back to hiswork. “P-Put your mask back on, yourlungs don’t need the extra stress.”
“No.” Genji grabsLúcio’s wrist and stops him again. “Notuntil I get an answer. Yes or no? I need to know, please.”
“Yes!” Lúcio blurts out before he can even consider sayingno. “Now please put your mask back on.” Genji doesn’t fight him this time and Lúciocatches the glimpse of a smile before the mask covers it back up. “I’ve always wanted to try Greek food,” hetacks on a beat later as he switches out the over saturated gauze for new strips.
“Jesse took my brother to one the- the other day… We could try that…”
“I would love to. Wecould go for a walk afterwards and get some desert or something,” Lúcio rambleson. His heart is beating wildly in hischest for two very different reasons and he always found that music or justtalking calms him down. He needs to keephis hands steady until backup gets here.
Genji’s hand falls off Lúcio’s wrist. He freezes and notices that Genji’s chest hasstopped moving completely.
“Genji?” Lúcio says, barely above a whisper.
Nothing.
“Genji?” he says a little louder.
Still nothing.
“Nononono.” Lúcio starts panicking and realizes how big thepuddle around them got. It looks likeall his work was for nothing. That allhis training and skills and dedication changed nothing. “Genji, wake up! Wake up!”
He scrabbles for the first aid kit and grabs the syringe of adrenalin. “You are notallowed to die right after we finally scheduled a date. That’s just straight up rude.”
He pulls away the plate that goes right over Genji’s heartand stabs the syringe in. He chants ‘comeon come on come on’ under his breath but nothing happens. His vision goes blurry as tears startfalling.
“Dammit.” His handsslip on the slick armor as he starts chest compressions. “GODDAMMIT! YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DIE!”
The wind whips up around them and Lúcio watches the dropshiphover above the rooftops as Mercy and Pharah fly down to them.
“We need to get him out of here! Quickly!” Mercy says.
Lúcio steps back as the caduceus beam locks on and theyland. Pharah scoops Genji up and rocketsstraight back into the air, Mercy right behind her. Pharah’s back what seems like a second laterand flies Lúcio into the drop ship as well. Tracer hits the throttle as soon as the bay door closes and breaks morethan a couple air speed laws as they head back to the nearest Watchpoint.
Lúcio helps Angela stabilize Genji in the back and whispersa prayer to whoever’s listening.

Old Soldiers, Chapter 12: i'm pretty sure what i saw, but i could be wrong
[AO3 link]
"I'm pretty sure I know what we're gonna see on this video," Venom said, back in her Tracer garb, but still more than a bit blue at the edges and entirely gold in the eyes. "'Cause I'm pretty sure I know what I saw." She gave Angela Ziegler a pointed look. "But... I might be wrong."
Most of the current members of Overwatch Lunar Embassy sat around a table in the ambassador's workshop - even Fareeha, though her thoughts clearly chased rabbits elsewhere. Lena glanced over with more than a little sympathy - she hardly even remembered her mother, and couldn't even imagine what it would be like to have one return from the grave.
"If everyone's ready, I'm going to start with Ana Amari's recording," Winston said, to general assent. "I haven't looked it yet - Athena's just finished deep-scanning the media for anything... inappropriate... to our systems."
-----
Jack Morrison looked at the drive containing the video. He didn't really want to play it again - it scared him. He had some ideas about why, but he didn't like them. Being a super-soldier was one thing. Being... whatever this implied... was another entirely.
He sat quietly in his temporary quarters on the small Los Muertos compound just south of the New Mexico border. He could hear Delgado outside, running her fighters through the training regimes he'd taught her, with that new man, Arturo, acting as her second. Jack smiled to himself, hearing the noise. If we're not careful, I'm going to end up with a pretty good strike team here. Already got one that's not half bad, he thought.
The former - and, arguably, again - Strike Commander looked at the drive a third time, thought, the hell with it, and linked it to his padd. A notice came up, saying the file system was damaged, and he let it repair itself, which took only a couple of minutes, and produced a slightly larger video file.
-----
Winston hit play. The large wall display showed a view through a sniper rifle - a conventional firearm, not Talon make - and Venom chuckled a little to herself. Still using the old-style scopes, grams? Good to know. Through it, from above and from two alleys situated a town that looked hot and had signs in Spanish, a group of Los Muertos fighters spilled out, led on the far side by one all too familiar white-haired super-soldier, on the near side by a woman clearly his lieutenant mirroring his actions, and through upper windows by a set of three sharpshooters. Military tactics against cheap street thugs means a battle that would end quickly, until blam, blam, blam, and all three sharpshooters were down, and there was chaos.
Morrison dodged into view, and the sniper fired, again, quickly - Venom could see Jack all but centred in her sight - and again, that blur, and then, Morrison is fine, and dodging away, and one of the fighters with him is dead on the ground.
"What th'..." said Reyes, as Mercy blinked, and looked confused. Mei looked at the screen, and back to the doctor, similarly confused. "What just...?"
-----
Morrison saw himself spill out of the passenger side of the lead vehicle, face bloodied, just as he remembered. He stopped the video, and zoomed in as far as the footage would allow - the resolution wasn't bad, but the lens wasn't great, and the image could've been shaper. Then, the blurriness got much worse, before returning to sharper focus, and his tactical visor was intact.
What the hell, he thought.
He stopped the replay, and backed up the video, and ran it again, in slow motion, frame at a time, zoomed in as before, tracking his own movement manually.
-----
"Winston, stop the replay?"
The scientist nodded, and motion stopped.
"...re-run that last shot at Morrison, slowly."
The sniper's scope tracked the soldier, a second fighter next to him, close by, but not unduly close. The shot rang out, just behind the former strike commander's motion, but still clearly a headshot. Then the blur.
-----
His visor had definitely been wrecked. Whoever took the shot had hit it perfectly, sheering right across his eyes, ripping most of it off his face without touching his skin. Hell of a shot, he thought, complimenting whoever - or, knowing Talon, whatever - had taken it. Then the blur.
He stopped the video, and studied the frame carefully. The compression wasn't too bad, but the resolution could've been better. He zoomed out, and saw the side of the truck in as sharp a focus as it had been a few frames before - just the upper part of his face became an indistinct mass.
-----
"Stop," said Venom. The video froze in place, blur still covering most of the field. She walked up to the screen. "See these?" She pointed at the sniper scope ticks around the frame, still in perfect focus. "And this?" She pointed at a perfectly-focused truck lamppost base, in the upper left corner. "This isn't recorder artefact."
Winston nodded. "I agree. Whatever this is, it's a real effect."
"Sorry luv, but the news gets worse. I saw exactly this happen," Venom said, "though my sight. I didn't talk about it yet, 'cause I figured maybe I blinked" - though she knew damn well that was impossible - "or maybe someone ran between me and Jack right as I took the third shot. But I know I had him dead in my sights, and when I fired, somebody else was dead on the ground."
"You took a kill shot?" asked Reyes.
"Third time, in that mess? Bloody right I did."
Mei looked unhappy and Gabriel frowned, but found couldn't really argue. "...fair enough."
Venom nodded. "Step through, frame at a time?"
-----
Several more frames of blur, and then, one where it seemed to thin, and then form a line along the horizontal centre of the visor, and there the visor was, again, intact, and Morrison saw himself reaching up and activating it, without a second thought, just as he remembered, during the battle.
He flipped through the last set of frames. Nothing more than what he'd already seen - a broken visor, a blur, and an intact visor, in that order. It didn't make any sense. Nothing in the Soldier Enhancement Programme could do anything like that.
Unless.
Unless it wasn't the SEP.
-----
Several more frames of blur, and then, one frame where the blur, the fog, seemed to coalesce on the right side, and then the soldier's head was to the right, apparently unharmed, and the fighter whose head had been all but out of frame was dead, on the ground, a large section cut out, almost scooped, mostly missing, and Mei made a small choking sound as the view through the scope swept from the dead fighter's body, back to Morrison's intact and dodging head, and back to the woman, and back to Morrison, before the shooter took another shot just too late, into a wall, as Morrison dove down an alley and behind a skip.
Winston blanched, and spread the key frames across the display. Gabriel looked more than a little ill, himself. "I have seen some fucked up things in my life, but that..."
Venom looked over to Dr. Ziegler, her anger controlled, but not entirely concealed. Angela said nothing, staring intently at the images. "Doc? You gonna say somethin'?"
-----
Morrison thought back to the failed defence of Overwatch Geneva, when everything came apart, falling into Angela Ziegler's lab, badly hurt, bones broken, stumbling around in the dark, the only light the emergency exit signs and his biotic field, as he grasped around, looking for the aid kits he knew had to be down here somewhere.
He remembered finding one, no, two, and applying them both, and passing out as another blast hit the base.
And then he remembered nothing until he awoke, having somehow made his way outside, having scavenged a UN uniform from one of the Talon soldiers, and feeling more than a little out of joint, like he didn't fit back together quite right, like everything was just a little off, or a little more than a little off, and he remembered putting it out of his mind and concentrating on getting away, getting as far away as possible, before Talon's UN puppets could get ahold of him, and make him pay for his defiance.
What were you working on down there, Angela? he thought to himself.
-----
"I... this cannot be happening," the doctor said.
"Pretty sure we just saw it," replied Venom.
"What are you talking about?" asked Winston.
"Angela?" the assassin prompted.
The medic shook her head. "I know what you are thinking," she said to Venom. "But you do not understand. My experimental nanosurgeons were not capable of doing what we just saw. Not even the most advanced ones."
Mei jumped in, supporting the doctor. "It's true! I knew that generation, this was not in their operating parameters."
-----
Jack pulled out his knife, pulled up his sleeve, and cut a long gash in his arm - nothing too deep, just enough to test his enhanced healing. The skin knit itself back together, normally, like it had ever since the treatments all those years ago back in California.
He cleaned his knife, put it away, and pulled out a pistol to replace it. He stared at the medium-caliber firearm, not sure he was ready to do what he needed to do, then chided himself for not being enough of a soldier. Enough of a man. It worked.
"Delgado!" he shouted.
"Yeah, Spooky?" she replied from outside.
"Pistol's acting up. Gonna fire a couple of test rounds in here, clear it. Don't freak out."
"Sure you don't want to go to the range for that?"
"It's fine, I've got a fire box."
"Oh, okay. Thanks for the warning."
"No problem."
-----
Venom pressed the point. "You're sayin' that's not some kind of experimental nanosurgeon swarm? 'Cause it looks to me like Ana made that headshot, and then somethin' stole some parts from whoever was nearby to fix it."
Dr. Ziegler rubbed her temples. "I agree that is what it looks like. But it cannot be what I made. If nothing else - I am careful! None of my experimental versions will, or even can, remain active for so long. The last time he could've had access was when the UN moved against the Geneva watchpoint, and nothing from that generation could survive."
"The evidence," said Winston, "indicates otherwise."
"It can't be!" She slammed her palms atop the table. "None of the experimental models from that era could!"
Venom narrowed her eyes at the doctor. "None of 'em? You sure about that, doc?"
Dr. Zhou leaned over to Dr. Ziegler. "I don't think you should rule it out, I could help you go over the old records, over everything that was in there when the fighting happened..."
Angela looked over to Mei-Ling gratefully. "I really don't think it's necess..." and she blinked at a thought, and looked back to Venom. Is... that what you think? Venom's face caught the doctor's surprise, as she realised that the researcher hadn't actually put it together herself yet, and the Talon assassin just nodded, and the doctor bit her lip. "...I... it has been some years, and that was a tremendously hectic - even chaotic - time. It... we should investigate. I would very much appreciate your help in that, Mei."
"Sure, Dr. Ziegler," confirmed the eco-biologist.
"Thank you," Venom replied, nodding. About time.
"God damn," said Reyes, "Could it be more than just him? Could others be... infected?"
"Absolutely not," said Angela. "My nanosurgeons would've impressed themselves with the initial contact DNA, it would be impossible for them to spread successfully. All" - she stressed, pointedly - "of my technologies rely on that. All of them."
-----
Morrison pulled up a trouser leg, pulled off his left boot and sock, and aimed the pistol at the outer edge of his foot. It'd hurt, but it wouldn't kill anybody - particularly not him. But he hesitated.
Do it, you coward, he thought to himself. God damn it, just do it.
And he fired.
The pain was brilliant and sharp, more than he expected, but muted itself quickly. He felt suddenly almost like he was in a dream, half asleep yet fully awake, as he watched his foot splatter, then turn into a greyish and pink mist, and reform, in front of his eyes.
-----
"Meanwhile," said the Talon assassin in Tracer orange and Overwatch white, "I don't think there's any safe way to bring him in alive now. I think our friends should get the next shot."
"No!" interjected Mei, with unexpected force. "That's not what we agreed!"
Tracer, or Venom, looked over to the Chinese scientist. "We agreed Overwatch gets first shot, then..."
"No!" she insisted, even more forcefully. "I will not go along with that!" She looked straight into the assassin's gold eyes. "You are not the only one he abandoned to her death. He abandoned my entire team and I want him tried for that. I want it exposed! I want my friends to be..." she choked a little, and suddenly she was crying, "I want my friends to be remembered! I want justice for them! In court, with it all exposed for the whole world to see him for the monster he is!"
Lena blinked, and blinked again, shocked by the intensity of the normally cheerful woman's outburst, and leaned forward, "Oh wow, Mei, I'm sorry, I know what..."
"No, you don't know!" The small woman shouted. "You know what it's like to disappear for years and wake up in the future but you do not know what it is like to wake up and find all of your friends dead because he couldn't be bothered to send a rescue ship! He knew we were in cryogenic suspension and still alive. At least with you, he thought you were probably dead, but with us, he knew we were alive, and just decided to let us die!"
She continued in a small, quiet voice, "And most of us did. Slowly. In the cold. As the power ran out."
Nobody knew what to say. Gabriel and Winston knew it wasn't that simple, but knew better than to open their mouths. Angela just leaned over to the smaller woman and offered her hand, and Fareeha just sat quietly next to her wife, comforting her in turn. And then Venom found her voice, at last. "I'm... I'm sorry, Mei. You're right."
Lena "Tracer" Oxton took a long, slow, deep breath, and let it out. "I withdraw my motion. Our friends will remain on stand down. Overwatch will try again."
-----
God damn you, Ziegler, the stroke commander thought, staring at his perfectly intact left foot, which moments ago he'd shot through for a second time. He shook with unreasoning fury. What the hell did you do to me?
